Highlights or solid color haircolor?

Which do you think is a better look generally? I vacillate between the two. In theory, highlights should look more natural because of the variation, but up close they just look stripe-y. On the other hand, solid color can look unnatural because there is really no color variation. I'm getting my color done soon and need help!

I used to get only low-lights that really helped blend in the gray. I recommend that if you don't feel the need to change the complete color. Very natural looking, not stripey.

Now I get a solid color AND occasional highlights. The highlights don't need to be re-done very often, as they still show through when I get my monthly re-touch of solid. It looks very natural. You can also ask for highlights that are not too light so it's not stripey and more blended.

Good luck! It has taken me a few years to find the right solution and hair person that does it right! (I think my 4th or 5th place.)

One block of color never looks good and highlights need not look "stripey." A good colorist can do subtle highlighting. Just discuss what you want.

If done right, highlights shouldn't look stripey. It was always jarring for me when we lived in DC I would fly home to AZ and everyone there has the tackiest stripey highlights--like they want people to know, hey, I paid for these!

I've always just gotten a partial highlight on top and around my face.

The last person who colored my hair did a great job, she said that every 2 or 3 visits you should go a little darker, just to balance out the color.

Totally agree. If you have friends and you like their color, ask them who does it. You may need to switch colorists to get what you want. Mine laughs at me because I don't like to kick it up (really lighten it up, etc), but I get a slew of comments on the fabulous blend of the color, my gray, my original color, etc.
