Question about college major

Anonymous
I told DD I'd ask here, she knows that you all tell it like it is! Anyway, she's trying to decide between

Environmental Economics and Management (B.S.) or Advertising Management.

Presumably jobs further down the line aren't a total match for major anyway, so I'm guessing she wants to know which sounds better or will be more employable. (For instance, DH has history degree and works in IT).

Any strong leanings one way or the other?

Why are they so specific?

Why not Economics or Marketing?

Engineering or CS.

Economics
--she'll learn good stats skills that she can use in Advertising if she wants.

Whatever makes her happiest, although I agree with a PP who noted how specific those two majors sounded.

OP here. It's really frustrating to ask a question like this (please pick A or B) and then to have people chime in with Z.

04/14/2021 17:28 , thank you, I'll pass that on.

Whatever makes her happiest is obviously one of those two, which is why she asked. They majors sound specific because that is what the university calls them.

What a useless response. Why even bother? Or can you just not read?

NP. The issue is that (1) they sound rather narrowly-focused, and (2) employers may not be familiar, at first glance, with what these majors entail. Intuitively, her situation for employment might be more flexible with a more typical major, with an added focus or concentration, something an employer can understand at a glance.

"Environmental econ and mgt" sounds more like environmental.... policy, maybe, not actually economics. Advertising is a subfield of marketing, for which a broader marketing degree with a focus or concentration in advertising courses might be a more...marketable way to describe it (pun intended).

Econ for sure

^^Meant to add, in the big picture, the narrower the degree, the narrower the employment options, at least when it comes to electronic filters of resumes.

Look for another university. It shouldn't be so specific in the degree itself. It should be, for example, a B.S. in Business Administration with a major (or concentration) in Environmental Economics or Marketing. Advertising will be a course or two within Marketing, especially at Undergraduate level.

Signed - Advanced degrees in Engineering and MBA.

Is she just looking at what major is most fun or which major will set her up for a job? I mean, what does she want to be when she grows up?

That's just useless.

And I'll raise you two Engineering degrees and a PhD. Just answer the question next time.
