Would u see ENT for tonsil removal ( 8yo)

Anonymous
DD gets 2-3 sore throats a year. It’s been strep a couple of times but usually not. She gets a sore throat and fever, lethargic, no appetite. It lasts a few days then she starts getting better. Would having tonsils removed help? They are red each time.

I'd consult with an ENT who can make that determination and, if necessary, take them out

IMO surgery is best as last resort and 2-3 x per year doesn’t sound too bad for a sore throat and not even strep each time. But see what ENT says.

The infection-related reason to take out tonsils -- which are lymph tissue and actually fight all sorts of infection -- is if and only if the active immune system tissue is scarred down and filled with pus. The surgery is helpful is it is removing a SOURCE of infection.

Otherwise, you're just taking out healthy and useful tissue for no reason. That's why the AAO-HNS guidelines look for 7 infections in one year, or 2 years in a row of 5 infections per year, or 3 years in a row of 3 strep throats a year.

Yes. I got mine taken out at 40 after a lifetime of throat infections, mono, tonsil stones and passing on my infections to my kids.

It was terribly painful for 10 days and yes, I would get it taken out again in a heartbeat. I wish I would have taken it out earlier so that I would have remained a healtier person.

My kids have throat stones too and they are too chicken to get it removed. So its not as if someone is taking my advice. I really cannot mitigate their suffering in life if they don't want to listen to advice.

No ENT worth anything will subject your kid to the risks of general anesthesia and surgery just to avoid a minor sore throat once in a while. I honestly can’t believe you’re even asking this. In addition, you can still get sore throats just as easily without tonsils, and you can even get strep without tonsils.

tonsil stones are not a health issue. They are just bits of food that get stuck in your tonsils. Totally harmless.

ENTs have criteria they use to determine if your kid should have their tonsils out. Consult one.

We see ENT at Childrens. They’re great. Highly recommend (I think in DC, my kid sees Dr. Zalzal)...

It smells like death. It is terrible for your social and romantic life. It is a source of embarrassment and mental stress. Afterall, who wants to kiss someone who has tonsil stones? It harbors bacteria. People can smell your $hit breath from far away. It grows inside the crypts of your tonsils and it is gross. Your tonsils are worth taking out for that alone. Many kids develop the tonsil crypts after a bout with mono.

I get tonsil stones often. Of course it’s gross and stinky if you don’t deal with it, but why would anyone just walk around with tonsil stones? All you have to do is press gently on your tonsil with a q tip and they come right out. I get tonsils full of them, and I check often. Not a big deal, just part of oral hygiene for people who get them. Definitely annoying, bug definitely not worth having surgery over.

Yes, absolutely. I had to fight tooth and nail for a tonsillectomy for my then 6 year old and it was 100% worth it.

I would consult 2 or 3. Always get second opinion if they suggest surgery. We did and both said removal and while we are glad we did, it was ROUGH for my kiddo. She was 11. The younger the better. They told me at 11 it would be rough for her but I had no idea how bad it would be. Put it this way, I cried a lot seeing her in so much pain during recovery.

I got my tonsils out at 23 after years of the same and lots of sore throats, I believe because of the tonsil stones. They are breading beds of bacteria if you have really bad crypts which I did. Not good for you. Process didn’t hurt at all and I ended up with a surprisingly much stronger immune system afterwards! The issue must have really been suppressing my immune system

Seriously you are asking social media about surgery for your child?

OP talk first to your pediatrician than to an ENT.
