Would u see ENT for tonsil removal ( 8yo)

Anonymous
Curious what you did?

My 8yo daughter is having hers out next week. She frequently complains of sore throat, but they are due to tonsil stones. My ENT said it is a great age for recovery. I had mine out in April as a 35 yo, also for stones and tonsillitis. My recovery was horrible and my ENT said her recovery should be nothing like mine.

2-3 seems perfectly normal to me. It’s building up immunity. My kids had tonsils out and we were told 6 strep infections/year was the decision point for removal.

My 8 year old was getting sick every 4-6 weeks before the ped finally referred him to an ENT. He had 10 infections in one year. Only after removing the tonsils was she able to see how diseased they were.

FwIW after I had mono I maybe had 6+ instances of tonsillitis a year but the ENT did not want to.take my tonsils out and told me it would improve, which it did. I was a teen at the time.

Tonsillectomy is no joke. The tonsils are quite close to some serious blood vessels and you can have some really severe bleeding. A friend of mine had to have emergency follow up surgery because blood started gushing from her mouth. We were in college at thr time so older but this can happen to kids too. For 2-3 sore throats a year? Eh.

OP here. We went to the ENT. He said not enough throat infections to qualify for tonsil removal but referrred us to do a sleep study due to snoring. Sleep
Study showed mild apnea. So the two things together qualified her for tonsil removal. They are enlarged as well apparently. We have scheduled it for Nov because she will need to be home for a week and she already has that week off school. On a side note she had a sore throat yesterday and stayed hike from school because it’s a Covid symptom and I’m not gonna be that parent that gets the class sent home.
