How long can mayo sit out (on a sandwich)

Anonymous
A friend kindly picked me up a sandwich from my favorite deli and dropped it at my stoop (I wasn't home!) Probably sat for about an hour in 50-degree weather. Safe to eat? AHHH.

What place is serving sandwiches with Mayo at 8:45am? I assume this is something that happened yesterday. Did you eat it? How’d that go for you?

It’s fine. Eat it and enjoy.

FTA- This reminds me of when my mom used to send me mayo and cheese sandwiches for lunch in a brown bag. It would sad out all morning regardless of the whether. Not only did I survive but I bed it’s what gave me my very strong immune system .

Commercial mayo has so many preservatives in it - remember it sits on the shelf for weeks/months before you buy it...

Yes, but it's hermetically sealed. Nonetheless, for years I have consumed mayonnaise that has sat unrefrigerated in my 67F house for 24 hours at a time some time longer, with no ill effect.

I wouldn’t worry about the mayonnaise. Commercially produced mayo is generally shelf stable, even after opening. It’s the other ingredients that are potentially more perishable.

Growing up, my mother never kept mayonnaise in the refrigerator. I am appalled now, but none of us ever got sick as far as I know.

Years ago mayo was homemade and basically eggs and oil. Not the same as commercial. Most are acidic enough to retard bacteria.

I’ve left the mayo jar outside all night sometimes. We’re all still kicking.

It’s not the Mayo, it’s the other stuff in the sandwich that could be a concern. But I wouldn’t worry about it.

Never. Once a sandwich gets mayo put on it it needs to go in the trash.

It's fine. Unless it was in direct sunlight....then I might question it.

50 degrees for an hour? Are you always this panicky about food? Good lord, it’s fine.
