Wondering when students are required to attend summer school? For example, if DC passes a class with a B but fails the SOL, would summer school be required? Or if a student fails an elective like theater or band, could summer school be required by APS? |
I think they released the catalog. Definitely no electives are offered for failing. For high school there are limited retake options:
https://www.apsva.us/summer-school/ Usually if you fail an SOL that is required for graduation (like Algebra 1) they offer it again in the fall for retakes. You don't have to repeat the course. The SOL is not required to pass the course just to get the verified credit. |
It's never required. Definitely not for an elective. It's strongly recommended in cases but never required. Definitely won't be this year. They can't find teachers. |
Theyve literally just released the application for teachers. It isn’t known if they will have staffing issues or not. |
LOL |
+1 I already submitted my application though. Like many families we suffered significant income loss from the pandemic so I am teaching summer school for the first time in a decade. I suspect I'm not the only one making that choice. |
Did you see there’s a line item for incentives for in person summer school teachers? Hopefully it will drum up more interest. There’s not enough money in the world for me to sign up. |
So the parents of kids with IEPs who were told by principals that there’s a possibly of their kid being put on a waitlist if they don’t have enough teachers are just making it up? Ok then. |
Not sure why your principal would say that other than to temper your expectations. It’s true that applications for teaching summer school have just opened up. They will likely need more teachers because they are doing smaller groups and having more sites. I am sure they will have staffing issues. Most years the pay is like $40 an hour which after taxes is not worth my time off, especially after the hell that was this year. |
They have had trouble staffing it most years I have been with APS, I think that was probably preemptive |
I didn't! During the last economic crisis when my former district had stimulus funds we were given a $1500 stipend in addition to summer school pay. I'd love to see it. |
Why not work with your kid to help bring up the grade? |
Wow!! I had never thought of that. Proem solved. Thanks anonymous genius!! |
You should also pull out your magic fairy wand and change the grade. ![]() |
