FCC: anyone white-knuckling this week’s 4/5-day return?

Anonymous
I am thrilled to have all my kids out of the house all day today. But at the same time, I’m pretty nervous. I feel like a good 75% of FCCPS (students and teachers) went out of town over spring break, with many traveling by plane. For every “we drove to OBX and hunkered down,” there were 4 other trips to Disney and Vegas.

Just really hoping that community spread doesn’t take off with a bang, particularly since adult vax rates in Northern Virginia are moving slow. Plus no timeline for vaxxing younger high schoolers and middle schoolers, who collectively seem to be over this whole cautious distancing thing.

Definitely having the same feelings over here.

It’s safe. Watch this video put out in SF (where schools are still closed) and shared by infectious disease expert Dr. Monica Gandhi.

5 days/all kids.

It'll be fine.

Seems like a lot of the most vocal All Kids, All Schools, Full Time parents chose to travel over spring break too.

The hand wringers aren’t sending their kids in anyway. I traveled over break, and I’m fine with kids who traveled attending school with my kids.

Exactly. And won't be keeping them home today or this week to make sure their kids aren't infected. Selfish. Wish they chose what was most important to them rather than acting entitled.

I don't have any hesitations. This has been going on for months at private schools without issue.

One of my kids has been 4 day in full day for months with no issues, I am thrilled siblings are joining and it is now 5 days for all. We didn't go anywhere over Spring Break and neither did our neighbors. The teachers are vaccinated- I'm not worried about them. The kids wear masks. It's going to be okay.

Good grief, OP. You couldn't sound like more of a troll if you tried. No one who has been fighting for their kids to get a full-time, in-person education is saying they are "thrilled to have them out of the house."

Here's what I think.

- Kids may continue to get it and spread it to other kids.
- Teachers and staff are vaccinated and will largely break chains of transmission (meaning, they won't get it from a kid and bring it home). They are pretty much 100% protected against severe illness now.
- High risk parents and other community members should ALL be vaccinated by now. If not, I'm sorry but that's on them.
- Kids are more likely to spread it around if they're hanging out all day instead of being in school. At least in school they are required to wear a mask and stay 3 feet or more apart. In the real world, parents are not able to keep their older kids locked up at home, especially if they have to work out of the house.
- If parents are terrified of their kid getting Covid in a classroom, they should keep the child at home doing virtual school.

Hopefully we are going to start focusing more on severe illness (hospitalizations) and deaths. Cases may continue to spread but if they are 99.99% cold- or mild flu-like, who cares? Kids go to school during the height of flu season...

I hope more of the high school students will be vaccinated soon. I’m most worried about them. We will see how it goes in a month. But the PP is right, they are more likely to get it from each other outside of school unsupervised than in the building.

I know. Weird, right?

Of course they did. They are the same one who will send their kids to school sick too.

I’m an FCCPS parent and also annoyed with people who traveled. My kids are at MD and I only know people who drove. We haven’t been anywhere in over a year and haven’t seen family for holidays so I hear you on that. At the same time, I’m 1B and fully vaccinated. My spouse was vaccinated weeks ago. And 16+ will be in the next 6 weeks or so. It was time to get back to school and anyone who has a lower risk tolerance can stay virtual. I don’t know a single family who stayed virtual but plenty who are nervous and taking appropriate precautions.
