Infertility Support and Discussion
| I read in TCOYF and a couple online sources that this can help. Anyone try this? Was it successful? How much did you take. Going to talk with my OB about it tomorrow but wanted to check with you all too. |
| My lut phase was about 9 to 10 days. B6, or something, brought it to 10-11 days within a few months. I was able to get and keep two pregnancies this way. |
| I was really hoping to hear news like this. How much did you take? |
|
I think it works well for the women who only have a short luteal phase, and no other issues. However, if the reason why your progesterone is low is due to a "weak ovulation," there is likely another underlying reason. For myself, I had both issues (poor ovulator, low progesterone), so the B6 didn't work.
If you do try it and aren't having any luck, I would look into having some bloodwork done just to make sure there isn't another problem causing the progesterone issue. Good luck! |
| What is the dosage? |

OP here.
TCOYF says 100-800 mgs. I just talked with my OB, who hadn't heard of this remedy (not surprising, and I wouldn't expect most OBs to know about it), said he prescribes 75 mgs when people need B6. I got a 100-mg dose, and I'm going to take that. |
| Didn't do anything for me. Worth a try I guess. Looking back though I wish I had just gotten to the RE sooner. |
| With #1, I tried 100 mg of B6 after 6 months of TTC. Based on my charts, luteal phase looked to be about 9 days. It may have been coincidence, but I got pregnant after 1 month on B6. When TTC #2, I started B6 right away, and got pregnant the second month (same dosage). Good luck! |
| What is "weak ovulation?" |
The hormones at the beginning of the cycle (I believe estrogen specifically) are not sufficient for the egg to mature as it should. This is very common in women with later stage endometriosis. When the estrogen at the beginning is not satisfactory, my RE explained that progesterone levels are also lower at the end of the cycle. |

My luteal phase is around 8 days. With DC 1 I got pregnant the first month I started taking 100 mg of B6 daily.
My LP didn't get longer, but for whatever reason the pregnancy stuck. I even thought I got my period at the time, as I bled for about 6 days. Strange stuff. I told my doc this and he said that B6 is an old wives tale and there's debate over luteal phase defects in general. We're trying for #2. Took the B6 for 2 months and nothing. However I did spot a lot more and have somewhat erratic cycles. Then I stopped for a month and all went back to normal. Not sure if I'll keep it up this month. I guess what I'm getting at is that after the first I thought it was a magic bullet. Now I'm not so sure. Can't hurt to try it, but keep expectations low. Good luck. |
| I'm not all that into alternative medicines ... but I also think that OBs think that anything that's not a prescription doesn't work. I'm not surprised a doc would say it's an old wives tale. My OB also hinted that he doesn't think LPD is a real condition. And yet my LP is fewer than 10 days. |
