Feedback on Oyster Adams

Our daughter just got a spot for pk-4, to our surprise. Can any current or previous Oyster families give us feedback on your experience with the school? Thanks!

Loved it for 8 years. Incredibly disappointed with reopening efforts

Thanks PP. What model have they used?

Is your family spanish dominant? Did they pass the testing?

Didnt like the atmosphere for our kids. Didn’t like the way they treated my child with a learning disability. Not right for everyone.

That's not her question. OP can read the handbook, p. 36.

Some details here: https://oysteradamsbilingual.org/reopening-update/

Also, OP, not sure which ward you're in, but Ward 3 parents seem to have been most vocal about wanting schools to reopen. We're in another ward, were offered an in-person spot, and turned it down because we don't feel safe. Everyone's risk tolerance is different and one person's disappointment may not be another's.

We have been pleased with the communication regarding reopening throughout the year and are excited that IPL with teachers will be expanding to accommodate more students in term 4.

We are Spanish dominant family, so testing isn’t a problem. But this is our daughter’s first potential in school experience.

It’s a terrific school. Have one student at Adams and one at another dcps dual language program. OAis light years ahead. And I agree that schools need to reopen, btw. We did accept an in person CARES spot. The leadership at OA is heads and shoulders above our other child’s school. Take the spot, run, do not walk, to enroll. Welcome!

My son attended Oyster since kindergarten (he is in high school now). Our experience was terrible. We are one of the FEW black families who have attended OA, and we have been diminished and unsupported. Oyster Adams calls themselves an engine of change, but the reality is they brutalize black families. I won't name them, but the administration of the school called my son the n-word. I will admit that he was not being polite himself, but for grown non-black women to do this is terrifying. If you are black, do not go to this school. We must uplift ourselves.

I don't have kids, but I do have a graduate degree in dual-language education. Oyster comes up regularly in the research as the model for all other programs to follow.

You should go.

Agreed! Loved it for 7 years. However, I’m really disappointed in their lackluster reopening efforts.

This is quite an allegation! How long ago did your son attend OA? Did you escalate this matter to the principal? Is the administrator still there?!?

COVID and reopening aside, I am interested in the quality of education for a non-Spanish dominant family.

We are #1 on the waitlist but our other option is John Eaton. The appeal of OA to us has been the potential of middle school consistency.

Thoughts?
