| We’ve had some pretty crappy luck. Two years ago we had to make a comprehensive claim that was around $2000. Now, two years later, it seems we will have to make another, though this one more expensive at around $4000, they’re estimating. Two years ago we were surprised that our insurance DID NOT go up in price after the claim. What are the odds it will if we make this claim now? |
| The odds are good. Can you pay out of pocket and use a shop that won’t report? |
This. 2K pay out of pocket. |

Even if it causes your insurance to go up, aren't you still likely to be ahead if it really pays out $4k? Even a $100/month increase for 3 years is $3600, so you'd be ahead $400. And that's if it's really only $4k paid out. It's almost always more than the first estimate. Accident increases only stay on for 3 years at least in VA, so I would assume the increase from comprehensive would be three years or less. There could be a risk of losing your insurance altogether if something else happens, but even then, it's not too hard to get another policy.
-Signed someone who is pretty much always paying more because of spouse's driving (and, yes, our insurance got dropped and we got insured elsewhere for less) |
Plus do you have rental insurance? They will also be paying out that. |

Former insurance adjuster here. Comprehensive claims are treated differently than collision claims. You shouldn’t get dinged. Comprehensive covers glass, damage from hail or other environmental issues, accidents with animals etc.
For example, hail damage can easily be $2-4k depending on how large the hail was and how much of the car sustained damaged. What’s the situation here OP? |

I had 2 claims that were my fault and a hit and run where someone damaged my parked car within 18 months. (Just really bad luck, otherwise I’ve had nothing in 25 years of driving!)
After the 3rd claim my rates went up by about $50 for 6 months and then went back to the old rate. My umbrella insurance was cancelled though. |
| Those are small numbers for an insurance co. Think of accidents with multiple injuries. My father in law made a tiny ding on my car. $1400 to repair. |
| Your FIL made a tiny ding on your car and you made him pay to fix? |
How was a ding $1400 to repair? |
