Opening hybrid spots APS secondary

Anonymous
We were offered a spot in hybrid for after the break. They aren't bringing them back the first week. We received the call too late in the day to call back before break, so I guess I will need to return a week from Monday. Pros: Taste of the new normal, gets to meet teachers in person, experience being back on a schedule that doesn't involve the couch and pajamas. Cons: the 3 ft distance means room for us, but also kids a lot closer, inside lunch sounds so boring and we have never done inside dining, risk of exposure is obviously higher. I feel like we need to get over the hump, but I am nervous, especially about the timing. Anyone else get the call about the waitlist? What did you decide?

No. On wait list at WMS. Completely under your nervousness. With rising cases and all. What school are you at?

“Understand your nervousness,” that is.

Swanson.

DL is going fine, so I wonder if it's silly to rock the boat. That said, we've had friends in local schools (K-8, 6-12 and 9-12) that have been FT or hybrid all year.

If your kids are fine, keep them home. If their mental health or academic progress would be helped by going in person, send them. My kids are at WMS and very happy to be back. It was a very difficult decision for our family. The schools make it seem like its a very boring day with no socialization but its not the case. The kids are talking before class, during PE and lunch. It's been way better than we expected.

Also at WMS. On waitlist. Kids are doing find but when cases were dropping, I felt like it was time to get them in. They'd like to go in but are not miserable as is. But worried cases could start rising again in VA with what's happening nationwide. Maybe not since we are vaccinating like crazy in NoVa and also still have mask mandate. Agree it is nerve-wracking. Haven't gotten a call yet.

Why get on the wait list at all if you weren’t prepared to take the spot if offered?

I’m an APS teacher and have my own kids in middle and high school. Both have enjoyed going back and I love being back with my students!

We were excited about the opportunity, but nervous about the change. That’s very common.

There is a lot of impending doom talk and worry about 4th wave in my circles. I thought we were turning a corner.

I heard Fauci describe us as being at the corner and if/how we turn the corner depends on us maintaining mitigation measures.

Mine hasn’t. HS senior send it’s a miserable experience. She’s back to virtual. ONE kid is left in hybrid out of a class of 25. Way to go APS.

It would be an easier decision if I wasn’t seeing so many FL and Caribbean pics on social media from people in the same half of the alphabet with their kids in hybrid.

Huh? APS didn’t keep those students home, thank the families. It’s very interesting how the high schools have fewer kids in person, although I’m guessing it’s because they’re not yet vaccinated and close to adult age so students/parents are more wary. In my kids MS classes, there are about 5- 10 in every class.

All of YOU *chose* to keep your kids home, how is that on APS?
