My son is weighing these three options for computer science. I love JMU, but I think he'd have more job prospects coming out of one of the other two schools. Help me give him some pros/cons or factors to consider to make an informed decision. Thanks! |
UVA. Highest ranked CS program in VA (same as Tech). There are discussion threads here where people are considering going to UVA over Michigan for CS..
|
JMU is never the answer when these are the choices. |
Not JMU that's for damn sure. |
strange to be leaning towards the weakest of the options. Tech is the undisputed star for CS in VA but that's not one of your options so the next best would be UVA.
|
Umm, UVA above all the other's
For CS UVA, Tech, GMU, JMU in that order. |
He didn't apply to VTech - just not into the school/campus. He's not leaning toward JMU, but it's still in the running for him. I like the school, but I don't think it should be in the running for CS with the other options he has. |
Yes, GMU has incredible job positioning for CS in the DC area. And I am someone who loves JMU. I know this may not help OP, but if any other posters have younger students who’ll be applying in future years, the PP’s ranking is correct. |
The one where your child is most happiest. My husband went to a no name college and is in CS. They care about the degree and skill/experience. As long as its not ITT or certification its fine. Any of those are good choices. |
Thanks. He got into GMU but has no desire to go there. W&M not even making the cut here, huh? |
W&M is way better than JMU. |
Uva CS. Not a difficult decision to make. |
Undisputed star. Funny. It is not. |
Well I know someone at Tech right now on this major who looked into transferring to UVA and after a lot of research he decided it was not a better program, though probably easier. It’s my understanding that they are very closely ranked. |
I know a student currently in Vatech senior year, frustrated with the quality of choices available for jobs. Sure, many kids will go to big name, but you should evaluate based on options available to avg student. |
