what was your cost of medication for one IVF cycle?

Anonymous
We are planning our finances to start IVF and were not given info on cost of meds by our clinic.
I know it can vary, but I have no idea how much to plan for/budget for this. Please share your total costs for medication only for 1 IVF cycle and any details you're willing to give or tips on savings - thanks so much!

(ps. screw our healthcare system for making this all such a nightmare to navigate!)

Meds for my current cycle is about $5000. Last cycle (about a month ago) around 6k. It is the “discounted” price for sgf using Encompass Rx. We didn’t qualify for any other discounts (income based) it’s ridiculously expensive and the pricing between pharmacies can huge. Call around.

It varies wildly base on your insurance/pharmacy/protocol.

About $3,500 for the first cycle (cancelled due to low response) and close to $4,000 for the second one (40 years old, fully OOP).

Mine were usually around $6500, I'd say. (I did six cycles and they were all high-dosage. All OOP.) By far the cheapest is when we had a physician friend in Germany get and - presumably illegally but wtf cares - obtain and ship meds to us for a couple thousand dollars. They're usually much less expensive outside the US, sigh. I've heard many people do get their meds from overseas. There is, or was, a pharmacy in Israel that shipped to the US; I think it is this one: https://www.ivfpharmacy.com/about-us/. It can be unnerving to do that, though, since the timing is so vital for IVF and if something gets held up in the mail it can really be an issue.

FWIW, the best pharmacy prices I found in DC were at Grubbs. The PP who said that pharmacy prices vary widely is right, you should definitely call around before placing your order!

The individual pharmaceutical companies also often have coupons/rebates on their sites and I successfully applied for those, too. So I'd recommend looking on the individual manufacturer sites once you get your prescription from your doctor, to look for things like this: https://www.ferringfertility.com/paying-for-treatment/save-on-your-medication/endometrin-savings-program/.

Good luck, OP!

Check with your insurance before buying anything! I was told multiple times by my clinic that they never see insurance cover meds, but I checked with my insurer and sure enough, they covered them under my “pharmacy benefit”. It had nothing to do with my infertility benefits. I ended up paying just co-pays.
