Personal experience with SGF backup for FET?

Anonymous
I am starting my first round of IVF as soon as my period gets here (next week-ish), retrieval around April 18 potentially. I am 39, secondary infertility. We are doing shared risk and PGT-A testing. I have read here and heard anecdotes that Shady Grove has a timing backup with transfers. Any details or info on that? My nurses have been very responsive, but understandably vague with my timeline. I am going nuts not having a general idea (control freak here...). If I have my retrieval around April cycle, would a transfer happen June or July? Later? Earlier? If that round doesn't work, any chance I could do another one before the end of the year? I know everyone is different, but any personal experiences?

I have posted previously here about this but my experience was retrieval the first week of february, test results received 11 days after retrieval, and then FET scheduled for first week of April, so about 6 week wait, after receiving test results. I have seen similar wait times among people in the shady grove facebook group.

PP Here, I think the nurses are also vague about timing because they want to manage expectations about having embryos for transfer. When they called me with my day 7 results, they said that we would discuss next steps when I got my results back, either scheduling a transfer or another egg retrieval.

Yeah this is one irritating part about shady grove. I’m doing a banking cycle right now and I already have two PGT-A normal embryos. They still won’t give me a FET date until I get my period, even though we already know I have normal embryos and that I’ll have to be on bcps for a bit. I think most people are on bcp for 1-3 weeks, but it varies a bit so you just won’t know until you call to schedule. Then once you get off bcps, transfer would be about 3 weeks later.

Thanks PP. Was your FET scheduled after you got the test results and were you given a definite day for a transfer? I would feel better if I had an actual day vs. having to check in with them every so often to get an update and not knowing what week it might happen...

Yes, my period started before I got my results back, so when I got my results I was abet to get an actual date and a schedule for baseline, medications, lining check, etc. If you have not gotten your period before your test results, they will tell you to call them back on Day 1 and they will schedule you at that point.

So you really need to be physically in town for a while (several weeks?) before the transfer date, it seems, for all that other stuff. Is that accurate? If there are 6 weeks between retrieval and transfer I was thinking of taking a week to go to a family lake house for some mental health time and distraction, but sounds like that might not be possible?

Not really, at least if you are doing a medicated FET. Most people go in twice, or maybe three times.. Once at baseline (after or right before stopping birth control) then about 10-12 days later for a lining check. If all is good with the lining you start progesterone the following day and come in 5 days later. If lining isn’t good to go you will have to come in for another lining check before the transfer. You can give them the dates of your trip and they can always have you stay on bcps for longer or work around it.
