“Ballston is kind of the like the upper east side of the area”

Anonymous
A New Yorker I follow on IG who just moved to Ballston said this on her Instastory, seemingly with no humor/sarcasm. I cackled and am now wondering if anyone would actually think this. FWIW I live in lowly west Alexandria so I do not have any sense of superiority, but thought it was hysterical and am curious what would cause someone to think up this comparison.

Her friends must be laughing behind her back. Honestly, the fairer comparison would be to call Ballston the Jersey City of the area.

Accurate. And I live in Courthouse so I certainly don’t have any superiority complex about it.

Conversely, the Upper East Side of the DC area - recognizing that these comparisons never translate that well - would be the areas in DC off Mass Avenue between Dupont and Westmoreland Circles.

I can get the comparison. Tons of recent grads move there, cram into group housing, and booze it up.
