| So I need a vehicle that can tow 5000 pounds. I also don't want a truck- want an SUV. I am committed to my next vehicle being either Hybrid or fully electric. Is it possible to get all three things in one vehicle or am I stuck only looking at trucks with that towing need? |

Hybrid Chevy Tahoe (old version with rear beam axle).
5,000 lbs is quite a lot (boat or horse trailer?) and when towing, you want your trailer weight to leave at least a 30% safety margin under your max tow weight. For towing, you won’t be using the hybrid drive system much except *maybe* at idle speeds. But if you need it as a daily driver with the ability to tow, then it makes sense in terms of realizing fuel economy for the times you aren’t towing. But if the vehicle is going to be a dedicated tow rig with very little other driving, then the added cost of the hybrid system doesn’t make sense. |
| We found that many hybrids do not allow you to install a hitch (eg CRV). It has something to do with the battery under the car. |
No, it's a daily driver that can also tow when needed. Disappointing there's very little in this realm. I wonder if I can rent a truck that has a tow hitch for the few times a year I need to tow? |

I don't think you can rent a truck with a tow hitch on it. we tried this once and ended up renting a UHaul truck plus a car dolly (sine we were trying to tow a car). Not fun.
We have a Pathfinder that can tow 5000 lbs but I see the hybrid is only capable of 3500. What about the Volvo xc90? You should leave a 20% safety margin for your towing capacity, so if you want to tow 5,000 lbs., your towing capacity should be at least 6,250 lbs.
In addition to towing capacity, there are some other factors to take into account. For a load that size, you will want an electronic brake controller, and you also have to consider tongue weight. Many SUVs are too short; you need sufficient wheelbase. What are you planning to tow? Please no horse trailers with anything less than a Suburban. |
Also the Tesla Model X (pure ev) |
