This is likely a stupid question for many but I managed to make it to my 50s without ever buying a car the typical way. I once tried, back in my 20s, and was so pissed off by the patronizing, sexist car salesmen (yes, all of them men) that I swore off ever buying from a dealer. Luckily I didn’t need to, but now I find myself thinking I’d like to buy a new electric car, maybe a Tesla Model Y. Is the expectation that I pay the price listed, or is that just the starting point for negotiation? If it matters, I won’t have a trade-in and went need financing through the dealer.
Thanks. |
*won’t need financing |
| Look up what you want and what people are paying. Kelly’s and other sites. |
|
Not sure if Tesla is special but in general they’re more likely to negotiate if you’ll take their financing.
Just make sure there’s no early pay off penalty. |

We emailed multiple dealers until we got the price that we wanted. Then we drove in to sign papers and pick it up. I too didn’t want to haggle.
When I was single I had my mom haggle for me. She gets a thrill out of it whereas I want to run for the hills. |

No real need to haggle anymore. Email 4-5 dealers and get price quotes on a specific vin or build. There's no more premiums for auto financing except in low credit situations, so nothing to be had there.
The best thing is to get pluses from dealer installed accessories. Dealers will order 100 sets of mud mats, for example, and will just give them to you rather than you buying them $150 on amazon. |
| There’s still haggling to be done. Lots of it if you want the best deal. Using the manufacturer financing to get the best deal as they expect to make money off the financing. Then pay it off the next month. |

| Not sure what these other people are talking about. Tesla doesn’t negotiate. |
Not everyone is Tesla slap happy you know. |
| I don't think you can haggle on a Tesla - there are waitlists for their cars. You have to pay retail. |
NP but OP said: "I find myself thinking I’d like to buy a new electric car, maybe a Tesla Model Y." |
| Always. |
| If you trade in your old car, very likely you will have to negotiate for the value of your old car. |
Just saw you didn’t have to trade in. Then yes you may be able to get a new car without much negotiation. |
