Do I need a sink in my laundry room?

Anonymous
Moving into a new home in a few weeks. Coming into the house from the garage is a small laundry room. The left wall has washer and dryer with cabinets above. The right side has a small sink, cabinets below and then about 2 -3 ft of open space in front of it. The sink is not a deep utility sink. Its just an extra sink. I would like to pull it out and make it more of a mud room or put in a storage closet. DH thinks we should leave it there. Realistically do I need the extra sink? I can do hand washables in the guest room BR (which I have done in my old house) and hang in that shower. We are not big DIY people so we won't be cleaning paint brushes in it or anything like that.

Some places require a sink by code. Check your jurisdiction.

I love my laundry sink but you do you

We have one in our new house but have never used it in the last 2 years. Currently I'm using it to store all of our masks and hand sanitizers for easy access lol. I would be happy to get rid of it for a mudroom.

What do you use it for?

We have a laundry room right next to the garage entrance and it has a utility sink. It's nice to have it there b/c as soon as we come in the door we can wash our hands.

We have another house where the laundry is upstairs with the bedrooms. That laundry room does not have a sink and it's been fine for years.

So I guess my answer is either way is fine, as long as it works for you.

Does your washer drain into it?

I would replace it with a utility sink and build your mud room around it. A utility sink is great to have. Rinsing muddy shoes, soaking dirty stuff, etc etc etc.

DP but I use it for soaking laundry (in a bucket), rinsing poopy onesies, cleaning garden things when it’s cold, a halloween dying project, rinsing plants, mop bucket, washing the dog, etc.

LOVE my laundry sink and if I didn't have one, I'd figure out how I could get one. I soak laundry in it, fill cleaning buckets there, washed dogs, bathed my babies, clean dirty things.... it's very well used. DD has been having terrible bloody noses and so I'm often scrubbing out her dresses or sheets there.

Washers drain into sinks? I don't think that's up to code?

I would keep the sink and make a mud room in the garage. Line a wall with cabinets and hooks and shoe racks.

you dont need one but having had one and not had one, I would only get rid of mine kicking and screaming. I'd take out the small one and put in a deep one with cabinets underneath.

Make it a utility sink. I live in a townhouse and don’t have one and miss it all the time. You don’t want to rinse muddy shoes or wash out a paint brush in your kitchen or bathroom sink. And you will be doing those things - you just don’t know when.

+1 for utility sink and mudroom. I really miss having one, not only for laundry and washing off outdoor things, but my kids' often do art projects nearby and I'd really rather they be able to wash off paint and dump out dirty water there instead of going to kitchen or bathroom sink.

Its nice to have a utility sink somewhere to wash dirty things - ours gets used most often to clean sneakers and paint brushes. If you would use the storage more than the sink then do whatever fits your lifestyle.
