Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this question as this is about local politics, but not local to DC. But this is more of a philosophical general question.
If you could choose a brand new slate of elected leaders, all across the board for your local government, including all the local government staff positions like the township manager, assistants, etc that matched your priorities, values, and philosophy - Would you? Something like this is happening in our local municipality, quite abruptly, over the course of a year, and while I am glad to have the leaders that reflect my values, I am disconcerted as well about the mass exodus of incumbents and long-time staff and all the knowledge and expertise they had. I'm also uncomfortable with the lack of diversity in opinion. How would you feel? |
| Is it about the lockdown? People are fed up. |
Who is fed up? The leaders or the constituents/residents? And no, it's not about the lockdown. There were multiple factors, but I think it was mainly the shifting demographics of the municipality, from lower income working class and older, to higher income middle class and younger. |
| Nope. It's bad enough when there is turnover of the good political leaders. It would be a disaster to lose the career civil servants who serve the community by serving those political leaders. They have all the institutional knowledge. |
| “Good political leaders” (whatever those are?) don’t turn over if they are reflecting and representing their constituents. |
| Losing the staff will cause problems, because that's a lot of institutional knowledge walking out the door. You need people who know the laws, rules, and procedures. |
That shifted in one election cycle? |
We'd probably be better of with a clear slate of new people. Maybe less corruption? |
Term limits get rid of the good ones just like they get rid of the bad ones. |
Most politicians don’t have term limits though. Mostly it’s just state and federal executives. We could use term limits in the legislature. |
It happened through the course of one election cycle, but also in addition, many were the result of resignations after the election and new slate. |
