Do you love it?!

| Vespas are adorable, but tough in terms of safety in this area with the traffic congestion and crazy drivers. Several years ago I saw a young woman on a Vespa on Wisconsin Ave. I thought, so fun! Several weeks later I heard someone on a Vespa in DC was hit by a truck and died. I prayed it wasn't the same girl, but tragic regardless of course. |

Yes, it’s very fun and easy. Pre-COVID, I could get from my home in Glover Park to my office near the WH in 10 minutes. With the rush hour traffic.
But I’ve had so many close calls in a decade of commuting in DC. I’ve had 3 low speed laydowns: two due to slick roads and one that was . And one crash into an Uber coming from the opposite direction that drove across my lane to pick up a passenger; I crashed into the passenger side of his car. All were very scary. Now that I’m 40 and have a kid, I think it may be time to sell the Vespa. I’m very interested in a Boosted board for commuting purposes. I think I’d rather use bike lanes and sidewalks. Fortunately, I had no major injuries or need for hospitalization. |
| Yes, but not in the U.S. I love my Vespa, and use it in Greece when we are there for the summer. I wouldn't feel safe riding it here. |
Honestly, the rideshare drivers are the biggest risk. There’s been multiple times where they’ve slammed on the brakes without warning to pickup or dropoff a passenger where I’ve nearly crashed my Vespa in the back of their car. They will go from 30mph to a dead stop in less than 75 feet. It’s very difficult to stop a Vespa that quickly at that speed and maintain control. Back in 2011 - before ridesharing really proliferated - DC was much easier to ride my Vespa. It’s so much more dangerous these days. |
