Virginia AG asks colleges to rescind policies protecting gay state employees

Cuz nobody in Virginia would ever discriminate!

I don't even have a dog in that fight -- I'm not gay -- but it's always a sad day when someone tries to "take away" rights.

Bunning holds the nation hostage. The RNC recommends the use of fear to raise money. Cuccinelli says a non-discrimination policy is illegal.

Are the Republicans still favored in November?

I am sure they are. Persecution of homosexuals will play well in much of Virginia.

Whether it will do the university system any good is another question.

What a shit that man Cuccinelli is. How these people sleep at night is not clear to me.

Communist Northern VA needs to wake up and get to the polls on non-Pres elections. This is unconscionable.

I'm sharp enough to recognize irony, but I'm not sure whether it's liberal irony or conservative?

Nonpartisan, perhaps?

I must have missed the news flash where homosexuals are flagrantly abused in Virginia. Look, it is hard to have it both ways. Gays want to be treated as equals in marriage, domestic partnerships, and as a protected class every place else? Really? I am a live and let live Republican. Don't mess with me and I won't mess with you. I don't see the issue here.

Do you think it is acceptable for an individual to be fired because they are gay? Removing the protections allows that to happen. It's not a question of whether it is happening flagrantly because a single case too much in my opinion.

Yet another reason why I will never live in Virginia.

Isn't it a bit hypocritical for someone from a protected class to begrudge protection to others? DC isn't the only place that protects on the basis of political affiliation, is it?

That doesn't make sense. You don't understand what a protected class is. Everyone is in at least one protected class. You cannot be fired because of your gender. Even you have a gender, right? If you are a woman, I am sure you are in a protected class and yet you want to be treated as an equal. Same is true if you are a man, though. You cannot fire someone for being a man.

Come to think of it, homosexuality is not a protected class. Sexual orientation is the protected class. Unless you are sexless, you have a sexual orientation, too. You cannot be fired for being heterosexual. That kind of discrimination may not come up much, and you can thank the gays you hate for being bigger than you.

I found out about a situation at a DC university where the heterosexual employees felt they were being passed over in favor of gay employees. They sued and won! Does this pp not want protection for heterosexuals? That's the logic behind that statement.

10:13 here. To clarify, I meant the pp who is opposed to keeping sexual orientation in anti-discrimination statements.

Although he may well be correct that only the General Assembly can extend protections to state employees, I hope some University's governing body tells him that they "disagree with his interpretation of the law, and decline to take the actions he has suggested" - i.e., stick it. Then, he can either do nothing and look like an ineffective dolt, or pursue legal action, and diminish his chances for securing higher office. Because you know that they have already started printing the "Cuccinelli for Governor" signs. Aargh.

Wow, it appears that McDonnell sort of overruled Cuccinelli today.

http://www2.timesdispatch.com/rtd/news/state_regional/state_regional_govtpolitics/article/governor_urged_to_issue_anti-discrimination_bill/329477/

"'Discrimination based on factors such as one's sexual orientation or parental status violates the Equal Protection Clause of the United States Constitution. Therefore, discrimination against enumerated classes of persons set forth in the Virginia Human Rights Act or discrimination against any class of persons without a rational basis is prohibited,' McDonnell said in his directive."

Very strange given McDonnell had removed protections for gay state employees. I guess he felt some heat.
