Who Owns Guns?

Anonymous
DH wants to get one. I'm vehemently against this (for a million reasons, mostly because we have two small kids). He says lots of folks have them. I say only tea party types and drug dealers do. Do you own one, and why?

No.

When would it be safe to shoot a gun in DC? Not where I live. Not inside, not outside. Remember a kid got shot through his front door here in DC not long ago...

Furthermore, if someone knows you have a gun, you're more likely to get mugged or robbed for it. They're more valuable than computers or audio equipment.

Just inviting trouble.

PLUS, I don't allow my child to go to your home if you have a gun. Period.

Why does your Hubs want one? Certainly not just because "lots of folks have them...."

Uh, my next door neighbor does here in DC. Neither a drug dealer nor a tea party type. A general manager at a restaurant.....

We have a few. My DH used his hunting as an excuse to amass a rifle and shotgun collection. Along wit the guns (at my insistence) came a gun safe which is kept behind a locked door in the basement. He also wants a handgun but that is where I put my foot down.

No, we do not.

I feel safer not having one than having one.

PP here: Because of where DH works he has to keep his hobby very quiet. Pretty funny.

And police officers. Federal law enforcement agents. Military.

I suspect most people who want guns are very damaged individuals.

Stereotype much?

wow -- this is really offensive. there are multiple studies that show that increased gun ownership in a community decreases crime because criminals are aware that the people they rob may have guns (or there may be guns that will be ussed against them in the homes they break into). in fact, someone just mentioned the other day that there's a gun in every home in switzerland (by law, i think) and there's also very little crime. i think this was one of the issues in the dc gun case last year (or so).

wanting to protect your family is not an indication of "damage." while we don't own any (this is a debate in our home, too), plenty of normal, undamaged, upstanding people own guns and either never use them or use them safely. they are not drug dealers or tea party types (well, not all of them, anyway)

Dear God!

Only evil Republicans and their less evil drug dealer counterparts own guns. If your husband wants a gun he must be a closeted Rep. or drug dealer and you are secretly wishing he would become a drug dealer, right?

Gather good statistics, that aren't emotionally fueled, about why you oppose guns in your home. Have a rational discussion with your husband and your fears of accidental shootings and the kids. Listen to your husband and find out what drives his desire to own a gun. Maybe he is afraid he won't be able to defend the family if there is a break in.

I suspect that most people who feel the need to judge others are severly damaged, both mentally and emotionally.

I am vehemently against guns but my husband owns several as he used to go hunting. Our compromise is that he may not store his guns under the same roof as where I sleep (right now they're stored at his parents' place).

For the record, my husband is a big liberal and supports government regulation/restriction on owning and carrying weapons. The only argument he has ever made about guns that made some sense to me was that he was glad his father taught him how to properly respect and use a gun. It hasn't convinced me that we should ever let our own children use guns, but it showed me that there are rational, loving people out there who own guns but are not, as another poster suggested, "very damaged individuals."

If you want to deter intruders, get a dog. Much more effective than owning a handgun.
