Experiences with having a CVS

Anonymous
I’m having a CVS next week to look for a specific genetic disease my baby is at risk of having. I will be 12 weeks at the time. I’m nervous about the results of the test of course, but also for the test itself. I don’t know anyone who has had a CVS. My MFM said as I am a thin person it makes it easier for her to do it abdominally, so I guess that is positive. If you’ve had a CVS, could you please share how it was and how long you waited for results? Thank you.

I had a CVS. It ended up being vaginal because of where the umbilical chord attached. I was a veteran of fertility treatments, so was pretty used to intravaginal treatments. It was very quick. They use an ultrasound to watch where the probe goes in and I could see the screen. The first set of results came back in a few days, the FISH results for the most common trisomies. But, we were testing for microdeletions and other less common problems and it takes a much longer time for the microarray to come back. They get reported in batches of descending likelihood. I had my CVS in early November and the final results came in in mid January. I had a 1 in 3 chance of something being wrong and that baby is now a healthy seven year old. I hope everything works out for you.

I had one done (transvaginally) around 11 weeks. It was very easy. Results took about a week.

The provider actually kept stats on m/cs after CVS vs typical mc rate for age; I think the excess in the case of this provider was 0.25%.

Are you given any pain meds / numbing for it or for after? Did you have any cramping? DP who is thinking about this.

I had two, both though my abdomen, as PP said, they decide based on where the placenta is. Both were easy, I don't remember any side effects or pain. If I remember right, we had the results within a week.
