APS: HB Woodlawn waitlist

Anonymous
I understand there is usually very little movement with the HB waitlist, but I would love to hear from parents who had children offered a spot to HBW from the waitlist. Can you share what grade your child applied to and when they received an offer. Summer, mid-school year? If you recall, what waitlist number did they start with? If you are comfortable sharing, would also love to hear what school allocation you were waitlisted for. DD is currently waitlisted for 9th grade with the Swanson allocation. She has a fairly low number but not sure if it's low enough for her to have a chance at a spot this upcoming school year.

My daughter had a 4 on waitlist moving from elementary to 6th grade at HB. Never moved, no offer. She’s now in 8th

So she was #4 on her elementary school’s 6th grade HB waitlist, but didn’t re enter the lottery in middle school?

you need to reapply every year for HB

You do need to reapply every year but realize that there are pretty much no spots outside of 6th and 9th. Very few kids leave outside of those grades. Still worth reapplying but the likelihood is extremely low. A current students has to leave in order to make a spot.

We applied every year for my current 8th grader. Started out as #32 leaving our elementary, reapplied for 7th and 8th and got a number in the 50's for 7th and then in the teens for 8th. The 8th grade waitlist number did go down two over the course of this school year so either two students got a spot or two students withdrew from the waitlist - with the pandemic, it could be that some people ahead of us on the waitlist left APS? Applied again for 9th and now DC is #3. So we're getting closer, but not close enough....good thing we're happy enough with our neighborhood HS - didn't apply for Tech or IB as we didn't think either program was a good fit for DC (DC went to the virtual tours and agreed). DC is a little quirky and would have enjoyed the more informal setting of HB but I think the wider selection of courses, especially electives, at our neighborhood HS will be a good thing so in the end, all will work out

Sorry for my ignorance but what are some of the courses that regular schools have that HB doesn’t?

HB parent here:
-HB doesn’t offer intensified English or science or social studies courses. Just regular and AP. Math does have intensified. There just isn’t a population to support 3 levels of each subject core course with only 120 kids per grade. In some classes (English) AP and regular are in the same period, but AP has additional work and material to learn.

-fewer electives
-no marching band
-no sports teams other than ultimate, you can participate in home school sports but it requires some schedule choices as you miss the last period of the day at HB since they start and end later than the big HS’s.

I'm not familiar with all of the class offerings, but from the HB program of studies document, it states this:

Curriculum Choices at H-B Woodlawn: Students accept the limitations in program offerings when they enter H-B Woodlawn. We do not offer home economics, technical education, industrial arts classes and various other classes offered at the comprehensive middle and high schools.

I believe there are also fewer languages offered at HB, for example, they do not offer Japanese or German. I believe the neighborhood high schools also offer more specific art classes such as pottery.

HB doesn't have intensified classes in HS. It has some AP but not as many as the standard high schools. You can pull up the program of studies for each school to compare.

My kid was #1 for 9th entry. He was 1/2 through 9th grade before we were contacted.

That’s not accurate. It may not offer intensified in all subjects, but my high schooler at HB does have some intensified classes.

You also have to realize that your kid may have the same teacher for multiple years. My kid had the same math teacher 3 out of 4 years. There appeared to be only one teacher who could teach Calculus, pre calc and algebra. Whereas at WL, there are likely 3 teachers who can teach algebra.

My other kid, at WL, has a wide range of course offerings. Computer science, game design, etc

HB does have intensified classes. Poster above has that incorrect. Also, my kid who graduated took at least 7 APs over the course of her time there. Psych, english, calculus, bio, chemistry, etc.

This will give you a better understanding of what courses are offered at the comprehensive high schools, many of which aren't available at HBW due to their smaller size. The biggest difference is in the selection of electives offered.

We know 4 kids that went to HB. Every single one of them transferred out. 3 for 9th grade and 1 left after Sophomore year.
