Has anyone else seen this video? How does this happen? How can a child have a .13 GPA and still be ranked in the too half of a class? It’s so sad. And there’s plenty of blame to go around.

Have you seen this post by a teacher?
https://www.dcurbanmom.com/weblog/2015/09/29/dcps-teacher Granted, it’s about DCPS, but I think it’s illustrative about what goes on in failing schools. The kids are so far behind and so disruptive that it’s near hopeless to get things done. That’s if the kids show up at all. |

I work in Baltimore and I know some secondary teachers (and primary ones) who have been pressured by admin to give passing grades even when the student didn't earn them. I've had students who failed every class and when we went to a retention meeting, the admin decided to pass them. Teachers bend over backward to contact parents but many of them aren't interested in anything to do with school. This year has made it even more clear. Many parents do not notify the school when their phone number changes. Every time I mark a student absent, it triggers a robocall home. That won't help if parents cannot be contacted. This student missed school 272 days over three years. How does a parent not know what's going on? We issue progress reports four times per year and report cards four times per year. If parents don't ask their child for their report cards, that's on them. We have a parent portal that parents can check 24/7. There really is no excuse for not knowing what's going on.
If you want to know what it's like in Baltimore schools, read this book. https://www.amazon.com/Teaching-Terrordome-Years-Baltimore-America/dp/0826219861 This documentary is also good. https://www.amazon.com/Hard-Times-At-Douglass-High/dp/B00ZBLCJ5M/ref=sr_1_12?dchild=1&keywords=baltimore+school&qid=1615050013&s=instant-video&sr=1-12 There is also another documentary about Filipino teachers coming to the city to work. It's called The Learning. Very eye opening. |
