costco broccoli- weird smell and taste- sweet?

Anonymous
This is bagged "Eat Smart" florets.

Ive noticed an odd smell with this before, but I just chalked it up to the bag needing to air out. I would rebag and it would be fine

But this time, the broccoli tastes sweet after steaming. Im serious. Like a weird almost carrot like flavor.

I find this a tad disturbing. The smell in the bag is odd today too.

I wish they had organic broccoli that wasnt frozen. This is Frederick costco.

Anyway, anyone else experience this?

This is fully mature brocoli crowns, not "sweet baby broccoli".

I no longer buy Costco broccoli because I found it so bitter. So, different problem but yes there is something off.

Ours was fine today, but I’m not even in DC.

I don't typically like to buy the pre-cut broccoli florets because I find that they get that bruised cruciferous vegetable farty smell. I prefer to pay the bit extra and buy whole broccoli stalks or crowns from the grocery story for this reason. Now for the sweetness -- I have had broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables taste sweet (kale, collards, brussels, cabbage...) - the growing conditions can make the flavor skew sweet or bitter. Sweet often results from a cold snap prior to harvest. Bitter results from too little water or too much heat.

We've been eating a bag this week and I haven't noticed anything off.

This happened to me once with Costco Brussels sprouts in a bag! They looked totally fine, but after roasted smelled and tasted sweet in a bad way, almost like rotten fruit. So hard describe but it literally made me gag and I couldn’t eat a single one. My boyfriend thought they were fine.

OP here. Well after steaming some, eating some and then storing the rest in the fridge overnight they now have almost NO flavor. Very weird.

OP again, YES! But only sometimes. I end up airing out the bag.

I use instacart and I have had some horror shows with asking them to pick out actual whole vegetables. One time I ordered napa cabbage, and what I got looked like a sea creature..yellow, limp, spotted.

Im guessing they didnt look at the picture and also clearly had no idea what NAPA cabbage is supposed to look like.

I don't like costco produce and I think it's because they come frozen, defrost slightly and seem to be refrozen. The bananas go from green to green/brown in days.

The bagged broccoli never tastes right to me. They must spray it with something.

Glad I found this post. I steamed a bag of the pre cut broccoli from Costco and it almost taste like corn to me? I guess kind of sweet?
