Whole Milk to EBF baby at 10 months?

Anonymous
My DD is almost 10 mos and EBF, and my supply is starting to dwindle because I just don't have the ability to pump as often as I should while at work. I was ready to start supplementing with formula at 8 mos, but my efforts to get DD to drink formula were fruitless. I tried 4 different kinds of formula, tried mixing it with BM (and of course cried each time I had to toss all that precious BM when she rejected it afte 2 sips), all to no avail. I raised this with our ped, and she said we could go ahead and try whole milk.

So my questions are as follows:

1. Have others out there introduced whole milk that early? I understood that the mainstream recommendation was to wait until 12 months.
2. How to introduce cows milk to EBF baby? Do BF babies typically reject cows milk at first the way they do formula? Do you start by mixing it with BM? If so, in what proportion? If you do, and baby rejects it, do you have to toss it all as you do with fomula or can you keep for next feeding?

Thanks in advance!

We had problems with DD taking whole milk, mainly because she was so accustomed to the BM being warm and the whole milk was cold. If we warmed the milk she was okay, now at age 2 she drinks the whole milk cold but it took about a month or so for us to get her to drink cold milk.

I would try warming the whole milk and giving that alone to her.

Best of luck!

My SIL introduced whole milk with both my nephews at 10 months. They had no issues - we also have no allergy issues in the family.

I would try straight i[ milk first, DC might surprise you - if that doesn't work mix with BM and gradually increase the % of cows milk.

I introduced cows milk to EBF DD at 11 months, and just gave it to her straight - I couldn't bear the thought of pitching a blend, and she took right to it, even straight from the fridge. Two years later, and she still loves milk. No history of allergies, and no reaction to the milk.

Our ped recommended the same thing with #3 and he took cow's milk without a problem. #4 is now 10months and quite by accident drank 4oz of cow's milk this past weekend. His "big" brother handed him the sippy cup and #4 gulped it down. So, two milestones out of the way. #4 takes cow's milk fine and can use a sippy cup!

Yep, introduced at 10 months. Also a family with no history of food allergies. Definitely try it straight first, but warm--that's how we did it, and DD was able to make the transition easily.

Us too. Our ped actually said whole milk is fine at 9 months (based on recent literature), although that seemed to run against everything we'd read/heard, and we waited until 10 months. Warm is definitely better accepted.
