Off the rack suiting -- help!

Anonymous
I snagged an unexpected job interview and am still losing my baby weight so my old suits don't look great yet. I need an off-the-rack suit in my current size that looks sharp, fast. I don't want sexy but don't want too conservative (i.e. Brooks Brothers) either. Where do I go?

I am tall (5'11) and lankyish (even if not as thin as I once was...), about a size 6-8 now. I'm thinking Benetton? I've had luck there before.

Thanks for the help!

Theory at Bloomingdales or Saks. You would probably be better off getting a dress with a jacket or a skirt suit so you don't have hemming issues.

I went through this, as I interviewed 10 weeks post-partum. I ordered 3 different suits in different sizes from J Crew (overnight delivery) and then returned the ones that didn't fit. It was a godsend...and while it was a lot of money for a suit that I ended up wearing just once, it was nice to have something that fit.

Ann Taylor - or Loft for less expensive...

For tall sizes, I order from either Banana Republic, JCrew or Eddie Bauer. I know, none of these exactly chic, but I am also 5'11" and have trouble finding anything long enough in the sleeves or pant length. Then accessorize. Like one of the PP, I order a number of sizes and send back the ones I that don't fit. Good luck!

Hit or miss, but can be WAY cheap- try L&T with coupons.

Ann Taylor has some nice suits right now - agree with pp on the skirt, not pants.

I usually hit Filene's Basement (I've had court appearances both postpartum and when 4-5 months pregnant and I didn't really want to look pregnant). I was always able to find a basic black suit for pretty cheap that I could liven up with a fun blouse, necklace, etc.

I third JCrew. Got a suit that fit perfectly after ordering three different jackets and pant sizes, had to overnight but worth it.

Inga's Once is Not Enough in Palisades. Get a fantastic suit for less money.

Theory has an outlet out at Leesburg.

another option for online ordering is www.Newport-news.com and they carry "tall" sizes too

You sound tall and thin--Theory would look fabulous on you, though I think it is pricey. J. Crew has nice suits--though most selection is online you could get fast shipping. Tahari used to make suits.

You might check out Lord and Taylor--they have sales all the time (and if you sign up for an L&T card you get 25% off all purchases the first day). They have a good selection of designer off the rack clothes including Tahari. Worth checking out.

Good luck on the interview!
