Hi. We are new to the area and my 15yo is having a tough time with the transition. He’s missing social interaction - as most kids are. Does anyone know where kids in the Tenleytown/Friendship Heights area go to skateboard? My son is very social and friendly. I was hoping kids would hang around the school but that’s not the case.
Thank you. |
| A skate park? |
| Sorry, accidentally hit submit. I don’t live in DC so don’t know about DC skate parks, but there’s on in Hyattsville that I always see tons of kids at. Maybe see if there any in the city. |
| Shouldn't he sort this out himself? He's 15. Send him out in a mask and helmet to go "exploring" and let him figure it out. He's 15! |
| There is a skate park in North Arlington near Bonair. |
| Google skateboard park.... |
| Op here: it’s a lot for a kid to process. Moving states and schools in the winter during Covid. Maybe your child can go sort all this out - and I’ve sent mine out hoping for the best - but I came here for guidance. |
There's nothing to sort out. He needs to just go out on his board and explore the area to find what he wants. |
| Hi OP. I asked my college freshman skater what he'd recommend for a new-to-town 15 yo in your area. He said Takoma and RFK skateparks are usually good spots, and woodside also looks pretty nice. |
That is probably the most popular skate park in nova. There are several sponsored riders that come from all over to skate there. It is packed and on certain days people are just there to watch the pros skate. It is also super crowded all the time. |
| Hi - Welcome to the area! Hard thing is that the weather isn't conducive to skateboarding right now (although today is pretty good!) My son, who is just about to turn 14, meets friends at the park in downtown Bethesda on Arlington Road. That's not too far from you. There is also a small skateboard part at Palisades Recreation Center, which is in DC not too far from you. Good luck! Another idea is to pay a visit to Bethesda Boards, a local board shop and ask the people there. They have several high schoolers who work there, so it would likely be fruitful. |
Interesting. I've wondered why all of the older (adult) skaters were there. I live down the street from the skate park. He would definitely be able to meet other kids there. There is always someone there. Always. |
| This is a hike for you but Olney has a skate park and (pre covid) I would always see kids and teens there. |
| Where are you OP? If you are near Bethesda there is a great skate shop there. Pre-Covid kids were around there all the time. With the weather getting warmer they may start hanging around outside now too. |
Yes, leave it to Arlington to spend 20m on one the best skateparks outside of California.
