Getting a puppy before Covid

I'm curious to hear what it was like to get a puppy from a breeder prior to Covid. Was it a fairly easy process? Were puppies widely available, and did you have your choice of puppy from a litter? The last time I had a dog, I was a kid and we had the pick of the litter from a breeder that lived a couple of miles from our house. I found the breeder from the Washington Post classifieds.

We are having a hard time finding a dog. (We are looking at rescues too, but would like a young dog.) I'm just curious if things will get better in six months or so.
