Hi all- noticed that most of the school threads are about elementary school age kids. Are there any Prince George's County charter schools that might be a possibility for middle school versus the parochial schools? We are a multi-racial family (Brown & White) and our child has been in a DC charter school since Pre-K and will be in 6th grade next year. High test scores aren't important to us- an inclusive and safe school environment (i.e. no tolerance for bullying) that encourages learning are very important. Our kid is more artsy /maker-oriented/sporty versus academically inclined so again having tons of AP classes is not a priority either.
DC feels out of reach for us on our modest incomes for homeownership and we really hope to not have to take on a 45 minute commute to work when the pandemic ends. Mt. Rainier seems to offer walkability, a small town feel and diversity - is private school really the only route if ? Thanks so much for any advice you have- |
I have heard a lot of good things about Hyattsville Middle school recently. I wouldn't eliminate that option. They have a really good arts program that you would need to audition into. |
Once you live in PG you can apply for the lottery for College Park Academy and CMIT. They have a lot of applications so your odds aren't great. Does the inbounds elementary school go through 5th or 6th grade? Most people I know are happy at St Ambrose in Cheverly. I know several multi-racial families who send their kids to the school. Friends Community School in College Park/Greenbelt is also very good but pretty expensive. |
