Now that OOB is over.........Is there any way to know which principals will be retained?

A principal and my child's teacher are THE TOP selling points for a school to me. At what point in the year are these decisions made? I hear they are year to year in DCPS (poor guys) and this would influence my decisions for next year. I know this may sound crazy, but any thoughts???????

Well, we know that teachers are fired in October.

Principal turnover last year at Janney, Murch, Stoddert, seems like announcements were made late May to mid- June. Rhee can fire principals anytime, and has made mid-school year personnel changes, not frequently, but sometimes.

if you post the school you are interested in, some current parents might have insight they can share

I would be very surprised if the Janney principal was not there for the next school year.

I will say that if you believe your childs principal is doing a good job its a good idea to put your support in writing to the powers that be. Often times the only thing that makes it forward is when we have a concern or want to complain about something. The good press goes to the JKLM schools automatically just because. But how many times do we write letters to the Chancellor about the good that our Principals are doing in the school that are not part of the JKLM movement? I think it will go a long way for the schools that have test scores on the lower end of the spectrum but are making sweeping changes to the school environment. I am not saying start a letter writing campaign or anything but when it comes to principal retention any positive notion is a good notion. I am going to start a new thread so that instead of us always looking to highlight the not so positive stuff we talk about what is going well in our schools. I think there needs to be some feel good stuff the down in the dumps stuff that always turns up.

On this board I have heard great things about the Principal at Ross, Francis Stevens, Cooke etc. I have noticed that Tubman has been mentioned, and Noyes....and of course the JKLM schools and principals. Have you written your email of support and hope.

If not, try it. It might help to keep your school (or future school) moving in the right direction with the right leadership.

We have a great principal at our "second tier school" that is often mentioned on these boards.

I like the idea of letter writing about positive things in principle, but I doubt it would make a difference. I don't think Rhee and company give a crap about what principals are truly accomplishing, unless the are the New Leaders for New Schools/handpicked by Rhee/under 40 set.

I find the whole thing depressing and know if our principal goes, we will be out of DCPS immediately.

Then write Rhee, praising her for having the good sense to keep your principal in charge, and cc Fenty and your City Council rep. That way you foist on her some "ownership" of your (great, if not handpicked) principal.

What school? If you like that Principal they deserve a good word. (Really tired of all of the negativity on these boards. Say something good.)

I think we should indeed write Rhee and the Mayor. Don't know how much good it would do. But its worth a try.
