Can I ask if teacher is vaccinated?

Anonymous
We were offered a spot at daycare for this spring. Am I able to reasonably expect the center to tell me if the teacher took the Covid vaccine or plans to?

No, and its not that easy to get vaccinations. Is your child vaccinated? Is your family vaccinated?

Those are are false equivalents. Children are not eligible for the vaccine. Most adults (i.e., family members) are not eligible. Daycare workers are eligible. You are right it can still be tough to get a spot and I could see a daycare refusing to answer the question, but those are different issues.

You can ask. They don't have to tell you. Do you ask if they get the flu vaccine?

This. And what if they tell you, oh the teacher plans to, and then the teacher never does. You’ve no way of knowing.

Administration is not allowed to ask if a teacher was vaccinated or to require them to be vaccinated in order to be employed.

They are eligible but good luck getting a vaccination.

What does it matter? You can still get covid and spread it even if you get the vaccine.

No but you can ask about the school’s protocol. One school we toured voluntarily told us the staff was getting vaccinated when I asked about their covid precautions

I'm not sure where you heard this, but it isn't true. Employers can mandate vaccines. They can demand proof of vaccination.

Not when it is approved under an EUA.

Yes you can, its been established employers can require vaccinations for employment. Hospitals require flu shots and if you don’t have one you are required to wear a mask. Its not covered under HIPAA as they teachers are not in a medical setting. Its the same way they should all be vaccinated for Tdap

You can ask, they shouldn't tell. But you can ask what their policies are (are they encouraging the vaccine, giving time off, helping coordinate appointments).

I am a vaccinated preschool/daycare teacher but it’s not anyone else’s business. If you’re nosy and don’t know how to establish those kinds of boundaries then it’s a red flag as how you will behave going forward.

It does not have to do with being in a medical setting. We are not allowed to share medical information for the children in our care because it violates hippa. The same applies to us and admin can’t share our medical information.
