Study abroad, fall 2021?

Anonymous
DD wants to study abroad in Europe for academic year 2021-2022. The programs she’s looking at say they are planning to run in the fall. Would you feel comfortable sending your college student to Europe in the fall?

Just to follow up, she hasn’t decided yet on a country, but is considering Switzerland or France.

No, it is too volatile right now. Could you wait until Spring 2022 or Fall 2022? Can you imagine if we had another lockdown, surge or other and your child were overseas? I wouldn't do it until we got back to our normal, whatever that may be.

I would not count on it.

Plus, she will not get out of it what she really wants to. Let her fully enjoy the study abroad by waiting a year. Going during a restrictive period will not be enjoyable.

Let her go. She is likely to be able to get vaccinated before she goes.

I think it depends on how independent she is, how good the program support is, and how much anxiety you can tolerate.

For example - I had a friend who had to get a son home from Europe at the beginning of the pandemic - that was very stressful finding a flight out before the lock down. But, in the Fall I have another friend who sent both kids to Spain - one to University and one to boarding school and that has gone great.

I do agree with PPs who have suggested that travel opportunities or cultural opportunities may be limited - only time will tell how that changes. Good luck!

If DD can get vaccinated, we're totally on board with her going. Praying that it will work out.

This is a tough one. I am a huge proponent of study abroad, so wouldn’t want her to miss the opportunity entirely. That said, is waiting until 2022 possible? I bet some not all programs will run, but there will be restrictions and risks of interruptions.

Could still be rolling lockdowns as EU is lagging in vaccinations.

No one will be eager to let Americans in this fall
