Anyone ever have ringing in their ear for several weeks?

I have had a high frequency really annoying noise in one ear for several weeks. Anyone else ever dealt with this?

I had some neuralgia recently in one ear (extremely painful) and vertigo, and was googling the heck out of it. I came across a condition called acoustic neuroma which is a tumor in the ear, or near the ear. Ringing in only one ear can be a symptom of this. Usually people have ringing on both ears.

If it is, don't panic. It isn't malignant but may require surgery. Because of this, I'd see a doctor about your tinnitus.

Tinnitus is very common and, I agree, really annoying. Can you pinpoint a possible cause: a really loud concert, using an ipod too much and/or turning the volume up too high, taking a new medication that can cause ringing in your ears?

This is a good source of information from NIH:

You should see your primary care doctor to try to determine the cause and possible ways to cope.

Tinnitus is very common. It is usually associated with hearing loss but not always. In many cases, tinnitus may not have an obvious cause or be cause for alarm, but in some cases it is associated with conditions that require medical treatment (such as the tumor mentioned above by a PP).

It would be best to speak with your physician to rule out any conditions that require medical treatment. Did you have an illness when it started? Did you recently start a new medication (some have tinnitus as a side effect)?

If you rule out medical conditions and still want help with your tinnnitus, some audiologists specialize in its treatment. There is no cure, but there are ways to try and reduce it and cope with it. There is a tinnitus center at the U. of M Medical School in Baltimore:

Hope this is helpful.

Couldn't it be something as simple as an earwax issue?

start with your PCP, but if you don't get answers get a referral to both an ENT and a neurologist. if it persists, ask them to rule out a condition called "meniere's disease."

Meniere's disease usually results in dizziness and hearing loss in addition to tinnitus.

Just go see your PCP.

Bypass you PCP and call an otolaryngologist who has an audiologist on staff (most do). You will need a hearing test and ENT appointment.

Agree with this. I started having tinnitus and turns out I have Meniere's disease and have lost almost all my hearing in one ear. Had I gone to the ENT sooner I could have gotten a steroid injection that they say helps if you do it soon enough, mine was too late.

i know. i have meniere's disease and wasted nearly a year in my PCP's office until the diagnosis was made which is why i recommended to start with PCP and move quickly to specialist.

I used to have ringing in my ear all the time and then figured out that it was because I was grinding my teeth at night. I got a night guard and it's fine now.

I had severe ringing in my ears and nothing seemed to help me. So I know exactly what some of you are experiencing now. I found a place that helped me alot. Check it out, maybe it can helo you too.

OP Here. Thanks everyone. I am going to see an ENT, my daughter has a good one, so I will just see him and bypass the PCP per the earlier suggestions. Hope it's nothing major, but it is preventing me from falling asleep and staying asleep at night and makes me feel really irritable, to say the least!

don't rule out it being a side effect from a medication. Certain meds can cause temporary tinnitus (ringing), including some antibiotics.

Does this "ring" any bells? (sorry, couldn't help myself).
