2 Large Cysts after IUI #1... now what?

Anonymous
Just got back from my cycle day 3 ultrasound and the told me I had two big/clear cysts on the right side and that they can't go forth with a second IUI until they are dissolved. My options are either try naturally without meds and hope they dissolve by next cycle, or start BCP so they dissolve. Has this happened to any of you and if so, what did you choose?

I had a cyst that wouldn't dissolve before an IVF cycle, even with the Pill. My doctor at Columbia Fertility aspirated it (I was under iv sedation). It was really no big deal, and we were able to start the IVF cycle right after that.

Thank you for your reply. I was so upset when I left there I didn't speak to anyone. I am 35 and feel like every cycle I have to skip is just setting me one step back.

This happened a couple times with me and the cysts dissolved on their own (had to skip a cycle each time). if I recall correctly, another option was to go on BCP pills which I hear really help and makes sense if you are already skipping a cycle, but we wanted to try naturally, as well, which we couldn't do if on BCP. Didn't get pregnant until the 3rd IUI so the natural way didn't work for us. My cysts weren't very large, though, so the aspiration might be a solution.

Forgot to mention I was 38 at the time and was miserable after learning I had to skip a cycle. In your case, though, since the cysts are large, you might want to bite the bullet and just get them aspirated or go on the pill so it is only one cycle you are missing. The odds are not in your favor to get pregnant naturally with the cysts. Do you have PCOS?

Thank you for your reply. No, I don't have PCOS. Before starting fertility treatments (this past cycle), I have always been a regular 28/29 cycle and all testing came back clean. We went IUI because of slight male factor and our ages. I've never had any issues until now. I'm waiting for them to call me back. The one FS did say that in my case he wouldn't recommend going on BC pills. He thinks we should still try naturally and hope that they dissolve. I hate that I was so excited and ready to start a new cycle and then get negative news.

Try to let them resolve naturally or aspirate. I have had cysts on several cycles and was convinced the BCPs were causing them. My RE disagreed, but I haven't had them since I have not used BCPs. In addition, another RE told me they could have definitely been the problem. They do resolve them for some people, but not for others.

I did aspirate on one cycle, but I still think it's better to let them resolve themselves as they are formed from a leftover follicle and you miss out on that follicle when cycling that month. Good luck!

I was on BCP (not TTCing) when I got a cyst. It cleared up in 2 months. BCPs generally help with the cysts, but not always.
