Cat doesn't use tree

Anonymous
We have a five month old kitten and when we got her we got a god awful looking cat tree that is in our living room. We were told she needs one, and that it should not be tucked away but in the area we spent most of our time. Well, it's there (it is in a corner near a window), but she very rarely goes on it. We give her her canned food there so the dog can't get it, but other than that she doesn't really use it. Once or twice she's laid on the top tier when we are all watching TV on the sectional next to it. Will this change as she grows up, or can I get rid of the ugly thing?

Get rid of it.

Some cats won’t use them. Ours preferred to sit on the arms of chairs or a sofa.

Op here - Ours climbs up on counters and chairs but mostly likes to splay out on the floor next to our lamp base like a dog! Maybe I’ll give it a couple months since she’s a kitten but I’ll be glad if I don’t need the ugly thing. Glad I didn’t buy the expensive nicer looking one!

Give it a little more time, but don't keep it if the cat isn't interested. Our LOVE ours so much I almost feel bad for not buying it for them sooner, but it IS ugly, especially now that they've well-used the sisal scratchers on it.

It sounds like you are feeding her on it? Possibly she associates it with eating instead of play. You could play with her and throw some toys up there and see if that changes it.

Then again, YMMV. I’ve had cats that spend all day in them, one who visited sporadically, and others who never ever touched the things.

yeah they are ugly them trees.
but if you insist on one, give cat incentives to use it, put it by the window to watch birds
or sprinkle with catnip.

the trees are made of particle boards and have ton of formaldehydes
not to mention of gassing ugly carpet.

If you lift the carpet this is what is underneath. Mostly pieces of wood and TON of horrible glues.
Your cat is smart not to use it.
