AACPS going back - woohoo!

After another long, meandering, and dysfunctional school board meeting, it looks like Anne Arundel is starting hybrid mode! Special schools, CAT centers, etc. will be phased in over the next few weeks, with Elementary starting March 1, and middle and HS back over the two weeks after that.

We'll see if it actually happens, of course, but this is the closest I've seen them.

Yes! Did they say what model they will use? Especially in elementary?

It's basically the same hybrid model they've been talking about since October. Group A in person Mon/Tues, Group B in person Thurs/Fri. Everyone virtual Wednesdays. Teachers teaching both groups at the same time. (Which is definitely the biggest flaw in the plan)

The schedules are available here: https://www.aacps.org/Page/9197 (Scroll down to see the hybrid schedules)

OK.

Friends, Fun and Flourish (30 min) is only mandatory for kids in person.... so that is when the teacher is supposed to provide extra help just for those in class?

And then the Literacy Engage piece (30 minutes) is during the teacher's planning. It is only mandatory for in person students. So it sounds like that's a time when students will be monitored by someone and will work on online reading tools. I'm not seeing any PE . I'm thinking it looks like the PE teacher, other teachers, and aides might supervise lunch, recess, and the Literacy Engage piece.

Cultural arts once daily -- that's Art, Music?

PE is considered one of the cultural arts. They are art, music, Pe, and media. The fifth will depend on your school (eee, ib pyp, etc)
The teacher can still make the “flourish” part of fff mandatory for virtual kids, just like they can now (starting this week)

They are still trying to hire “midday monitors” - no way will they get enough, so yeah - I think all the non-general-classroom adults in the building will be roped into that.

The elementary school have had an optional “friends and fun” half hour period during lunch all year. It’s just some time to hang out (virtually) with classmates and the teacher. Sometimes they play games or just chat or whatever. Basically just giving the kids a chance to be social with each other..
For the third quarter, they added the “flourish” which is a time for the teacher to pull individual or small groups of students for extra instruction.

Super excited. My kids can’t wait to go back. Very happy for some in person time for my elementary school kids.

Honest question - do you really think it will happen? I mean I know the schools are planning for a return, but I am still skeptical. I know TAAAC is planning a protest tomorrow at the BOE and the Capital is filled with articles about how it’s still safe.

Guess I will believe it when my child actually walks into the school!

I really hope it will happen. I honestly don't think that TAAC will be able to get teh BoE to wait until everyone has their second shot - that's at least a month and a half from now. Given that seems to be their only request these days, I think they've overplayed their hand. Who the heck knows, though.
