Anyone succesfully do a pupil place (school transfer) in Fairfax County?

I hear that these are next to impossible to get approved unless you have a childcare issue. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

At what level are you talking about? It is pretty easy at the high school level, but I'd imagine it's more difficult if you're talking about an elementary school.

As the PP said, it is harder in elementary than in high school. In ES, it basically needs to be for child care issues. Also, if your older child is in a special program (GT center, magnet, etc.) you can try to pupil place a younger sib if there is room. There is also some opportunity to pupil place if you are moving into a new school's boundary.

But at HS you can pupil place into a special program (IB, AP) if there is room.

OP here...it is for elementary. neighborhood school is really big and we are equidistant (sp?) from a much smaller school. But we don't really have the childcare issues (I am a SAHM). DC does have some special needs but not sure if that would make a difference or not. Thanks for the information!

Here's the link (which you may have looked at already) to the FCPS information. You may want to check to see if the other elementary school is closed to transfers; if so, whether your child otherwise qualifies for a transfer may be moot.

Does anyone know if you can do pupil placement if older sibling is attending a GT center? I do not see that option on the form that the PP linked to. (There is room at the GT center school.)

You can try but it's a shoe-in. I know someone who tried to get her younger child into Louise Archer because her older child was in the GT program there. It was a no-go. But I have herad it being done.

I think it's also dependent on whether or not the GT center school is open for transfers. If the school is already over capacity, then they are unlikely to accept a sibling placement.

Louise Archer, for example, is currently over capacity and is closed to tranfers:

You have to look for schools by cluster.

Thank you. There is room at the GT Center school/it is open for transfers. How do I request it on the form?

I found this in the FAQ:

http://www.fcps.edu/dss/osp/StudentRegistration/student-transfer/StudentTransferFAQs.pdf

If one of my children is assigned to another school through a gifted and
talented center or IEP placement, can my other children attend the same
school?
No, student transfers will not be approved on the basis of another sibling’s
placement since that is not one of the reasons for transfer outlined in Regulation
2230.
