Finally some common sense. It allows the Police Chief to assign SROs to the schools if MCPS wants them. It allows for modification of the program and requires training for things like restorative justice.
Most people want to keep SROs but many want to change the program. Nice balance of safety and recognizing racial disparities in arrest rates. https://bethesdamagazine.com/bethesda-beat/schools/county-state-lawmakers-battle-over-school-resource-officers-intensifies/ |
Good. The SROs on the whole are a benefit to the schools, students, and community. There is always room for improvement. Blanket banning because of perceptions about the program isn't helpful. The reality is that there is student-on-student crime that happens both within the building and in the neighborhoods. An SRO that has built up relationships with students can solve problems easier, will have students come to them with problems in the making and can head off bigger issues, and could have more background about any student accused of a crime and be able to interact with them in a more positive manner. Having no SROs doesn't eliminate student-on-student crime. If outside police have to become involved in something, they aren't going to know the students in the building, and there is a greater likelihood of poor interactions. I've taught in MS and HS and have a friend who is an SRO. I saw (pre-Covid of course) students hanging out with them in the hall before and after school and at lunch. There were good relationships happening, and lots of life advice and laughter. When a student has their phone stolen or is being threatened in the neighborhood, they are comfortable going to the SRO. |

This is why we need uniformed SROs in our schools. A security guard at BCC was overpowered today by a student.

Why do we need this? Can't they focus on education and try making school less like a prison. |
Just tell the perps to focus on education instead of crime. Report back. |
