SOL Exam?

What is this (in VA?)? Do kids need to study for it?

Standards of Learning exams.

SOL assessments measure student achievement in English, mathematics, science and history/social science. Students are assessed in English and mathematics in grades 3-8 and at the conclusion of certain high school-level courses. SOL tests in science and history are administered in grades 3, 5 and 8 and at the end of high school-level courses in these subjects. Some students may take tests at other grade levels based on the school’s curriculum.

Kids should be learning the curriculum all year long; then they get tested on what they have learned. Some review usually occurs at school.

You can read about them here.

Thanks. I guess what I'm trying to figure out is if studying for this exam this weekend is a legitimate reason why my step-son couldn't come over for his weekend visit. He generally likes to study for big exams at home, and we of course want to accommodate. But I didn't know if this was in the same league or if his mother is making excuses. ?

Depends how old he is. If high school, I could see it I suppose.

If elementary school, possibly his teacher sent home a study packet or soemthing of that nature that he has to complete. I think the tests are coming up, and the schools missed a week of review with all the snow days.

The English end tests for grades 5, 8 and high school (end of course) appear to be coming next week:
