Edible paper - any experience?

For the first time, we're having a real birthday party for one of our kids. Usually we just do a laid back affair with family but this year we're doing a bit more. I've heard about using edible paper to transfer a design onto a cake and wondered if anyone has any experience with this. I'm confident about doing the design in icing on the paper, I just wonder if the paper really does dissolve and not noticeable. Thanks!
