| My 15 year old DD wants a summer job. Does anyone know of decent employers that hire kids that young (other than doing her own babysitting, dog walking etc)? The local day camps, tutoring places, and sports groups seem to start at 16. Thanks in advance for any advice! |

Does 15 need a form filed out by the school/guidance counselor? Work permit?
|
| Nope. This is not 1996 anymore, where teenagers can work at grocery stores. Adults trying to support themselves and their families need those jobs. |
| Do mall retailers let you work at that age with a work permit? Try all of the usual suspects if so. |
|
No, sorry. My teens didn’t have luck with jobs until 17. The only younger teens I know working have an “in” with someone.
It’s a tough job market this year. |
In MD they do. I saw the form on my son's school's website. |
| Lifeguarding |
|
In VA, parent has to give permission for a teen who is 15 to work. My kid worked at Watermine as a park attendant, but they need many life guards and they were willing to train her. She didn't want it.
Very few places take 15 yr olds. Jr camp counselors and life guarding/pools/camps are where 15 yr olds can get paid employment....but it's all up in the air for summer 2021. Nobody knows if this stuff will be happening. |
| Maybe a CIT at a day camp? |
I just looked on indeed.com and tyoed in my zip code and summer job and lifeguarding had a lot of openings. |
| Lifeguarding and babysitting are it at this age. Get lifeguard certified over spring break, all the Rec centers and ymcas will offer the class, find one that works best for your schedule. |
| Maybe a local diner? A coney island type, breakfast/lunch place that doesn't serve alcohol. They will usually hire servers at 15. I worked at one for several yrs starting at 15 and it was a great first job. |
| Last summer our pool hired kids 15 and up to staff the front desk. My teen sat a a table outside the pool house (behind a plastic sheet) six+ feet from guests and checked them in on the computer when they arrived. Pay was only $11/hour, though. Lots of downtime to work on summer school assignments or watch Netflix. |
only $11/hr. |
| DC Summer Youth Employment registration opened last week. It's an option if you live in DC. |
