Appliances- Wolf, Monogram, Thermador

Anonymous
We are about to renovate our kitchen. We are considering Wolf, Thermador, and Monogram. Does anyone have feedback on their Monogram range or ovens? We would not get their refrigerator (looking SubZero or Kitchenaid), but their range costs less than the others and seems to work in the same way. Is Wolf worth it? Does anyone have recent experiences with Thermador? We are either getting a range top and double ovens or the full range. Thanks!

Why did you narrow your selection to these 3 brands?

I have all Monogram appliances in our vacation condo. They were installed by the previous owner approximately 5 years ago.
Because this is a 2nd home they get very little use. So far I have replaced the oven and the microwave and had to have the refrigerator serviced.
I’d never buy their products again.

We have a 3 year old monogram 36" range that we use all the time. We have had to have service technicians out twice to replace the thermostat. I am not thrilled that we have had to do this. My criteria / consideration in shopping was I wanted something that was going to last without significant maintenance. I want to know that when I go to use the oven - it is going to turn on and at this price point, I should not have something that feels like it is a part that "burns out".

We were going between the Wolf, Bluestar and the Monogram. I think we picked wrong. [note - the price difference between the Wolf and the Monogram were significant!]

I have a Thermador range top, professional double ovens and a warming drawer, I bake/roast a lot and they have different convection settings I use and like. I would buy them again. I love the 90 degree perfect simmer feature on the range, that's quite handy for delicate simmers, and for melting chocolate and holding it at a consistent temp to prevent scorching. I've also heard amazing things about Bluestar ranges over on the Houzz kitchen forum, so you may want to explore that brand too.

Whatever brand you decide to go with, you must pay attention to the vent hood and get one that can handle the BTUs that these appliances kick out. These are pro/workhorse appliances and you will need a good vent hood to keep up with it.

OP here. We are doing a higher end reno (not the crazy highest), and after talking to the appliance stores, one pushed Wolf (did not sell Monogram and didn't really mention Thermador), and the other pushed Monogram. I see a lot of Thermador mentioned on Houzz and it seems to be slightly more affordable than Wolf. Most people I know personally have put in Wolf. I'm open to other brands too. We want a more traditional look (so the very contemporary looking brands would not work for us). People rave about Bluestar, but I want something easy to clean and I worry that those burners might be harder to clean? This is our forever home, so I want something that lasts, works well, and does not require frequent maintenance.

10:59 again and I chose Thermador for our remodel because I had already had good experience with a previous range in a former house, and the Consumer Reports on Thermador are hands down the best ratings in the high end appliance category - I'd start there. There are a lot of complaints about Wolf repairs and the blue paint chipping off from the inside of the ovens. I don't have first hand knowledge of that, just what I have read over at the Houzz forums. Thermadors are workhorses, Wolfs are showponies.

I bought my package at Bray and Scarff, and despite the complaint thread I've read here on DCUM, they were great to work with. Their showroom at the time actually had a working Monogram package they let me play with, because I flirted with Monogram for about 10 seconds, until I played with the range and went "NOPE, not for me, going back to my Thermador."

The ranges are all fine. Seriously, you absolutely do not need insane burner power it is a total scam.

Oven performance varies widely but also isn’t a big deal for most people.

Get Bluestar.

That’s quite the statement you are making there. The chipping issue was years ago and appears to have been fixed. Nobody walks into a kitchen and goes, “oooh! A Thermador!” Regardless, they are all tools they can do the same thing.

We’ve had good luck with Wolfs as well as Bertazzoni, which was great and at a lower price point.

+1. They do have super powerful burners... and to the PP's point, it depends on what and how you cook.
We do a lot of wok frying, where having short bursts of high heat on thin carbon steel is very useful. Lower power burners end up steaming/braising the food, and you do not achieve "wok hay".

If you mostly do sauces and things which don't require high heat (i.e. spaghetti sauce), then yeah, having a powerful burner won't help.

Is Bluestar more difficult to clean?

I have a Wolf 5-burner cooktop (8 years) and wall oven (18 months). Been very happy with both.

We also have a Miele speed oven, which replaced our microwave; we like the flexibility it offers.

And FWIW, since you’re also looking at fridges, we really like our Electrolux fridge, which we’ve had for 6+ years.

I had Monogram ovens in my last house, and I hated them. I could never get the temperature adjusted properly and the convection setting was worthless.

I’ve had a Wolf cooktop and a Wolf range (neither bought by me, they were in the houses when I moved in), and they’ve both been great. Cook well, reliable.

Wolf is excellent and reliable, you can’t really go wrong with them.
