| Does anyone know of any magnesium and zinc supplements for kids that are gummy or chewable. My son hates the powdered stuff I mix in his drink. TIA. |

"Attentive Child" Magnesium supplement (includes Zinc).
http://www.amazon.com/Source-Naturals-Attentive-Chewable-chewable/dp/B000GFPCW0/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1267335684&sr=8-1-fkmr0 It's a large chewable (diameter of a quarter, but thicker) that tastes like a "Sweet-Tart" candy (if you're old enough to remember those). My DC objected the first time I gave him the tablet, but once he'd tried it (a VERY picky eater, mind you) he decided it was like candy. Hasn't objected since then. Frequently he asks for it. Good luck! |

I saw those at Whole Foods.
Mine actually thinks the fizzy drink is like soda. The powder has a lot more magnesium, before giving up on it have you tried it with an ice cube and a straw? DD had some tics (always in the fall and spring during allergy season) and they went away a day after starting the magnesium. She seems calmer and falls asleep more easily too. |
| I'm the OP. I tasted it in water and it is pretty gross. My son has never had soda so I don't think that will help sell him on the idea. How much mag and zinc do the chewables have in them? Do you take one or two at a time? I've seen them for sale at WF too but I didn't know they were chewables. Thanks! |

16:18 here.
The magnesium is 30%, zinc is 13% (recommended daily values). Zinc is frequently found in other multi-vitamins where as magnesium practically never is. The RDA of magnesium is so BULKY that vitamin manufacturers generally don't add it to their multi-vitamins. My child takes 2 per day. Don't take them with milk, calcium has a negative effect on the body's ability to absorb magnesium. |

| What kind and how much magnesium do you give to a 7 year old with a tic? Does omega 3 help? |
New poster who also uses Attentive Child (& Coromega, which I also recommend). My then 5-year-old developed a facial tic last fall. It was so upsetting because it seemed to come out of nowhere and our neurologist had no advice other than "it will probably go away, lots of children this age develop tics and they disappear as suddenly as they came." Needless to say, I did not find that to be a satisfactory answer and enrolled myself in Google University researching tics. What I found was that a lot of people with serious tic disorders (such as Tourette's) take Magnesium because it has a relaxing effect on the muscles. Magnesium is a necessary nutrient, but it is rarely, if ever, included in multi-vitamins because it is so bulky. I figured Mg was an easy thing to try and bought a bottle of Attentive Child. I gave two tablets the night I bought them and two more the next morning and I swear the tic was almost gone within 18 hours. It was THAT dramatic. And, it was completely gone within 48 hours and it has never come back. We now do only one tablet per day. It tastes like a big "Sweet Tart" btw, if you're old enough to have eaten those. Alternatively, you could use Epsom Salt baths. Epsom Salts are Magnesium Sulfate which can be absorbed trans-dermally in a 1% solution. (That's the reason a lot of people find Epsom Salt baths to be relaxing.) However, you won't get the Zinc and other trace nutrients or ingredients (I think there might be some GSE in there too?) that you get from the Attentive Child supplements. Good luck. P.S. Omega 3s are good for a lot of things and we use them, but I'm not aware of any specific benefit for tics. OTOH, they can't hurt. |

Kirkmanlabs.com has a liquid zinc supplement that is berry flavored. I've mixed it with juice and my kids have never complained.
I agree with a PP about Epson Salt baths for mg. |
| There is a chewable with 200 mg of magnesium and 15 mg of zinc. It is called On Task. My son's tics disappeared completely when he started taking it. |
Is it available online? If not, where do you buy it locally? |
On Task may be purchased online by visiting their online store. (see below) Good Luck!

On Task has good vitamins/minerals but red #40 and a bunch of other really bad additives! Are they kidding? Most kids with these issues need to avoid all those additives, especially artificial food coloring. Shame on that company! I was excited to see all that zinc and mag in one vitamin though. Oh well, the search continues...
There is a liquid zinc without bad stuff in it called body bio 2. I just ordered it and will let you know how it is. |
| My child has a zinc deficiency and we use MesoZinc. It is a colloidal zinc, so it is easier to absorb. I give her 1/2 teaspoon per day. |
