Covid test drives

How are test drives working with covid? Do I need to have the dealer with me? What if I stay in the parking lot?

Just like before. You give them your driver's license and maybe a credit card and take the car out on your own. Sometimes they'll recommend a route for you take.

Our experience exactly. I will say, though, that dealerships vary in terms of whether employees and other customers are masked and staying 6' apart when indoors. We walked right out of Koons Toyota when we saw that they were not observing or enforcing COVID precautions.

I took a couple of test drives and the salesman insisted on being in the car.

They've always come with me on the test drive. Is it really an option to have them not come?

Bot a SUV in December. I handed them a photocopy of my driver's license and asked them for a route. Followed their route without their sales person in the car. This dealership was following COVID precautions to a tee...masks, enforced social distancing of at least six feet. In actuality is was more like 10 feet.

Of course. I took a test drive of a luxury car at age 18 and drove 100 mph on 270.

Call ahead, set up an appointment for a specific time, and ask them in advance to explain their Covid practices.

People who make appointments are seen as more serious car buyers and they are going to be more willing to let you test drive alone.

Most dealerships will let you test drive solo without the salesperson as long as you let them photocopy your driver's license but most also reserve the right to make judgment calls on a case by case basis.
