| What are your 14 year old girls reading? Need recs. Preferably not all teen romances. |
| VC Andrews |
| At that age I enjoyed historic teen romance, i.e., Jane Austin books and Charlotte Bronte. |
| Mine just reread the Harry Potter series and then Twilight series. She likes to read a book, the watch the movie. |
|
Current list- she picks some and I give her 1/month:
Hidden Figures Unbroken (youth version) Jane Austen Seven Habit Successful Teen Twisted Tales Tuck Everlasting .... and still loves Spy School and Theodore Boone She has read HP, Twilight, Hunger Games, Maze Runner, Divergent series. |
|
Nop's Trials and Nop's Hope
The Book Thief Into the Wild Clan of the Cave Bear Watership Down Life of Pi An Ember in the Ashes |
|
Fiction
Artemis Fowl (Eoin Colfer) Ruby Redfort Series (Lauren Child) Agatha Christie books (And Then There Were None, Murder on the Orient Express - a fun movie to watch after reading as well) Americanah (Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie) Turtles All the Way Down (John Green) Nonfiction Bossypants (Tina Fey) Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Irin Carmon) Becoming (Michelle Obama) Born A Crime (Trevor Noah) What If? (Randall Munroe) Some of these could have slightly more mature material so it depends on your 14 year old. |
|
Ember In the Ashes (series)
Nicola Yoon The Hate You Give |
| Children of Blood and Bone |
|
Funny and easy:
Cherry Whytock Douglas Adams Sophie Kinsella Meg Cabot If she’s a Spanish speaker, Thalita Rebouças. |
|
My girls are older now, but some that they liked at that age are:
Ally Carter Gail Carson Levine Trixie Belden mysteries Interworld by Neil Gaiman Mrs. Polifax (I read the first one out loud to my girls and they got into it. I think we went through the whole series. Although the main character is a grandmother who decides to spy at the height of the cold war, which doesn't seem likely to appeal to teens, the books are really well written.) Also good: Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper Keeper of the Isis Light by Monica Hughes Reckless Magic series by Rachel Higginson |
|
Journey to the Center of the Earth
Ronia, the Robber's Daughter Bibbi Bokken’s Magic Library The Obedience Drug My Sweet Orange Tree The Little Prince Everything and a Kite |
I was going to recommend The Hate You Give. Also note that that author has a new book out, Concrete Rose |
|
Nevermore (Gaiman)
Arnie the Darling Starling And Both Were Young To Kill a Mockingbird Jane Eyre Ruffian (Schwartz) |
|
SO many great new YA novels, wow:
Concrete Rose (prequel to The Hate U Give which is fantastic if she hasn’t read it) Clap When You Land Grown Heroine Be Not Far From Me The Music of What Happens One of Us is Lying Fighting Words So so so many more I can recommend. What does she like? |
