walking to school

i'd love to hear from folks who walk to school--about what is max distance that you think an elementary school kid can walk to and from school? half a mile? (accompanied of course).

I walked a mile (alone) starting in third grade. I wish i could do that with my kids today. Although sometimes I'll see a group of two or three siblings being led by an older one around 9 or 10.

We walk about 3/4 of a mile each way, and have since preK.

Walking at a normal pace, you can walk a mile in about 15 minutes, so maybe 20 minutes with a four year old.

My 3 year old can walk a half mile without complaining -- a lot of smacking of fences with sticks and stopping to examine rocks -- but he can walk it.

If your walk is 3/4 of a mile or less, I'd say it is easily doable, and if you have a PS or PK kid, you can always use a stroller on days when you are in a hurry or if it is really cold or something.

I'd say closer to a mile. Mine sometimes rides her scooter.

My six year old daughter and I walk 1.3 miles to her school (but not everyday). It takes us about 30 minutes +/-.
