MCPS High schools with the top theatre programs?

I have a child who has a interest in theatre. We have a family member who lives in DC who offer to take him so he can be eligible for Duke Ellington but I rather use that as a last option. How’s Einstein or Blake’s programs?

Blair is THE theatre school in MCPS but it's a magnet program so you apply to get into the program. I'm not sure if kids for whom Blair is their local school can take those classes as well. I assume so but am not sure.

I think that the former poster is referring to BLAKE. Anyway, please do not cheat the taxpayers of D.C. If your child gets into Duke Ellington, you can pay tuition like other non-D.C. residents. In MCPS, Blake is probably the best.

What do you based this on, that Blair is THE school for theater, because i haven't heard this.

Blair theater program is a magnet program? Really?

I know someone who works in theater around here and said RM HS Black Mask group is really good.

Einstein has had really excellent theatre performances. Lots of very talented kids. They have the Visual and Performing Arts Academy (VAPA), which is the largest academy within the school. I hope they will be able to resume performances next year.

Einstein has more cappies than Blake. Einstein would be the best choice no doubt. No MCPS show can touch their production of Hairspray.

This is Blair's magnet program. https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/specialprograms/high/communication-arts.aspx

It focuses on the communications arts with a heavy dose of theatre. Many of the kids I know at the children's theatre I work at here in MoCo chose to attend the Blair magnet and almost all of them went on to study music/theatre in college.

I’ve been to Blair shows, and they were okay.

Were you going to transfer legal guardianship to your family member in DC? Otherwise, it may land you in hot water...

Very cool. I had no idea this existed. When Covid is [knocks wood] finally over, I'm going to check it out.

Go outside of MCPS. Their middle schools don't even have theaters or even do plays. Howard County and Fairfax County all have theater programs in middle and high school.

The high schools here are beginner basic as ever.

Are you okay? MCPS middle schools do have plays, some offer theatre classes.

+1. These were the plays scheduled for last spring at middle and high schools, many of which were sadly cancelled:

+2

My daughter was in The Lion King, The Little Mermaid & High School Musical in middle school at NBMS.

They were great productions... the stage crew was super talented with sets and scenery.

Blair has some great programs but it's theater is not a strong point. The annual Sankofa celebration gets more attention than the plays.
