Sport & Health trying to get me to sign up for a gym membership again

Anonymous
I used to belong to the Bethesda location but dropped the membership long before COVID hit.

They just sent me an offer to join the club with no initiation fee for $80 per month.

They've got to be joking, right? You couldn't pay ME to join a health club right now, and I'm sure many people (though not all) feel the same way.

I guess they've got to try to stay in business...

Me too. I haven't been a Sport & Health member for years and I got phone call.

Golds Gym just sent me a collection letter for $250. I cancelled my membership 9 years ago and this is the first time I received letter. I called to complain and the poor receptionist said she had been taking complaint calls about collection letters all day.

Gyms are trying to survive.

S&H member who returned in June.

Still covid free. I get while some people have nervousness, but many "regulars" have been going to the gym multiple days a week with no issues.

I stopped by a gym the other day at an off-peak time (for work), and it was surprisingly active. I wouldn’t say really busy, but there were people in every area, classes full of people, pool being used, snack bar area being used. Lots of people are going, you don’t have to go though.

I row during the summer and always freeze my S&H membership during that time (I pay year at a time and they adjust it). Then I restart it in November when we're off the water. This November I had to call and ask them if I could freeze my membership until November 2021. They were quite lovely and told me that it was fine. I hung up the phone and cried. (Yes, I'm pretty devoted to my gym. It sucked.) Anyway, just wanted to share that.

Which gym was this?

In VA? Classes are limited to 10 people in VA (9 students, 1 instructor).

Definitely not in MD. No snack bars, one person per lane in pool, classes are severely limited.

I feel like the people who say "classes are full of people" are the same people who think 6 ft is the distance of half a grocery aisle length.

You could not pay me NOT to go to the gym. It is my only source of sanity these days. But I am actually glad not everyone feels this way and so I do not have to compete for equipment too much. Though, as mentioned by a PP, my gym is busier than one would expect given the state of the pandemic and I don't think they are struggling with membership. I constantly see staff guiding around new prospects.

I was at WSC before the pandemic and had ClassPass. WSC South Bethesda has closed permanently. North Bethesda has stopped all their classes. I had been a member at another location before that, probably close to 20 years in total. I never thought I’d see the day I’d quit. I have no idea what I’ll do when normalcy resumes.

Same, I have been back at the gym since September and I have never been happier. The gym has certainly picked back up some. Never as crowded as it was pre-pandemic, but still fairly busy at times. Still never need to wait for equipment which is so nice.

I rejoined one life so that my son could use their facility for tennis when it is too cold to play outside. I haven't used the equipment or gone to classes, but my son uses the tennis court and I run on their indoor track when it is cold or rainy. They also have the onelife anytime app, which I can use to stream their classes at home. It's a nice feature.

What about updates on gyms? Particularly the Bethesda or Pike and Rose Sport and Health locations. I was once a member pre-kid at Bethesda and their rates now are SUPER low. Anyone know of deals? What exact amenities are available at Pike and Rose location? Do they have a sauna/hot tub specifically?

Thank you for any feedback or opinions!

Trying to decide between pike and rose sport and health Va N Bethesda WSC (now goes by NY sports club). Any thoughts between the two? Interested in personal training - lifting weights/aerobic mix.
